Welcome back,

dear friends. I have written about carrot salad, here, and--if you didn't get to it last week--about cranberry upside-down cake, here. I am loving this change to food and recipes, but I am sad that it leaves me frankly no occasion to tell you about what happened on Friday when I applied a neti pot to my clogged sinuses. All I will say is that Michael, who was in the bathroom with me when it happened, cried, "Holy cow!" as an entire universe slid out my nose and down the drain.

I am also finding little excuse to talk with you about how nine turns out to be the age of ages. Do you know what I mean? Does it last, this golden time? Oh, I want it to.

Love to you and yours.
xo

  1. I for one think that this is the perfect place to tell us all about those things! You don't need an excuse.

  3. Hey, we have nine year olds! WE could betroth them. i bet they'd be cool with that.
I'm scared of neti pots. I don't like the idea of anything even NEAR my sinuses, thanks.

  4. If I promise to always read your recipes will you tell us everything else here?

  5. Is it 9 that is the golden age? I hope so, cause someone told me it was 4 and it was so NOT 4!

  6. Oh my the neti pot! It took me about an hour to get the courage to do it, but you are right it sure clears things out.

Ben looks adorable and I can't believe how he has grown. Then again I can't believe Papoosie Girl is almost 8. Sigh.

  9. Sadly, no, nine is not the age of ages.... but that may be because my nine year old is a girl!

But I will look forward to when my almost 6 year old boy is nine... ahh - something to look forward to!

And please - post more! Life is going on and not being shared... I miss hearing about your sweet kiddos.

  10. Oh my goodness, does Ben ever look like Michael in that picture! (Or at least, having never met either in person, Ben's picture looks like Michael looks in pictures.)

  11. Why didn't I think of the neti pot? I have had the sinus cold of all sinus colds and am 7 months pregnant and cannot take the usual medicines...I have never actually done it (neti pot) but there is a fully photo-illustrated page on it in a yoga book I have.

  12. Oh please, please tell us those things. We miss them. I have my own little story to share, about a 12 year old (going on 16). We were watching TV the other night, and a prostate medicine commercial came on. One of the side effects of the medicine was a reduction in semen. So my son asked me, "Mom, what's semen?" Thank goodness he's had sex ed in school, because I was able to glibly reply, "Oh, it's the stuff that comes out of your penis when you ejaculate." And then, as he laughed his ass off, I thanked him for asking me such great questions. :)

  13. Catherine, the food journals are great, but of course we also miss your stories. I'm looking forward to the golden age, while still enjoying the preschooler life....

  14. I've had the universe come out of my sinuses before too. There's something oddly pleasurable about it, though in my particular case, it was about a week longer until I could get home and to my doctor about the sinus infection/ear infection.

I hope that my son (three weeks older than Birdy) becomes a dear nine year old one day. When will that be, oh, 2012?

  15. nine is a golden, magical age full of change. When Noah turned nine, I started finding us talking-- like real conversation talking as opposed to just the imaginary alien living above his dreamcatcher talking-- and it floored me. I suddenly found myself catching glimpses of the man he'll grow to be-- which both amazed me and made me horribly wistful all at once. Hold on to every moment of nine. That's my advice.

And oh, the neti pot. We just put it away, hopefully for a while, at my nose. I wonder if the universes that fell out of both of our noses are swirling around together in the sewer somewhere?

  16. Neti pots. Thrilling in a gross way, and oddly satisfying, like cleaning out the closets. Yuck, but hey, I can breathe!
Ben is beautiful and we want to hear more if you care to share. What's ahead?

  17. nine years old is absolutely dreamy. If ten, eleven and twelve are the 'tween' years, I have decided that nine is the 'twixt' year. Not my little baby girl, not snarky hormonal big girl.

  18. I must hear more about the neti pot! My sister Robin (she's on thebossyblog also) says that 9 is the golden age too. Why don't you post about it here? We all miss those columns! ;-)

I just posted about a Vegetarian Thanksgiving at thebossyblog.blogspot.com and man, the responses! Don't come between a woman and her turkey! WOW. ;-)

When I envision you using a neti pot, I can't help but to imagine that you did _not_ have the vaguely-blissful-but-clearly-zoned-out look on your face that the spookily-unperturbed woman in the demo video has. That woman is just creepy. Why isn't she shouting, "oh my god, oh, this just is gross, what have I possibly done in life that brings me to the Neti Pot?"

  20. I've got a ten year old and it just gets better. Well, so far it has.

And good for you for the neti pot. I've used it once and my SO had to talk me through it so I didn't panic when the water started to flow. He's an expert and doesn't seem to mind the massive flow of snot that issues forth.

Obviously, everybody misses hearing about your life. So, please tell us more great stories here and we will read about good food over there.
I'm buying a neti pot tomorrow.

  23. Maybe 9 is the golden age for boys but girls are already hitting bratty preteen years at that point! I think it is age 8. For boys, yes. 9. :)

  24. I think we are living the same life, except that I keep eyeing my neti pot suspiciously, rather than actually using it (and now, thanks to you, I feel justified in this) and my boy is seven, rather than nine. But I've been feeling the same, generally. With the sinuses and the boy, ya know.

  25. I wish it did last. My nine year old just turned ten. Ugh. Now he's king of the universe.

  27. Ben still wears pink striped shirts? (Or are those just his pajamas?) Hooray! It seems like so long ago you used to write about his favorite pink (raspberry, did you call it?)shirt , and it seems he's stuck to his fashion guns as he grew. Good for him.

  28. It was this Ben and Birdy article I was thinking of, by the way, about the pink shirt :)

Ok, I need to go anonymous on this one because I am strange about body emissions like this but I have to say, your description of the neti pot drove me straight to an online drugstore to order one (since I keep not finding them in my soulless suburban haunts). I am grossed out and totally intrigued by your description but oh-so-grateful for it. On Oprah, it just looked like this clear, genteel little flow. But man, if it can clear out this whatever it is that has taken up residence near my brain, I'm all in.

I've made the carrot salad several times now and just love it! So fresh and healthy. It really goes well with those salty heavy wintery meals. And so cheap and fast!
