The stuffed date Birdy made me for a snack. Heart heart heart heart. |
My dearest darlings, I am moving recipes here because the old ones don't seem to exist online anymore. Here today are five requests from the last few weeks. It's funny to interact with the old recipes. I mean, these are all dishes I still make regularly, but things are a different now. I tend to use half spelt flour, for example, in most baked and breakfast dishes. My pictures look better to me these days. (Tamale Pie, flash-lit? I mean, with the corn? My God.) And also, I make things veggie that I didn't used to. The Tamale Pie, for instance, I make with tofu, which I crumble and fry and season heavily before proceeding. I'll try to post that variation too, because it's entirely worthwhile. We just eat way more like vegetarians now, even those of us who aren't Birdy. Over the weekend, Ben grilled her about whether or not she'd eat road kill, which produced some interesting and philosophical conversation. She is not sure she wants to validate the sloppiness of drivers, and of human technology, when it comes to animals, even as she would not want their poor dead bodies to go to waste. If I ever make and sell a question jar, that one's going into it.
THIS WEEK ONLY: your recipe requests (for the old recipes) posted within 24 hours. Please, bring them on. It's the only thing that motivates my sorry, lazy ass to deal with this issue. Scan through the recipe index here. (And you do know that you can always click on it up there, in the upper right corner, under "Pages," right?)
And, in the meantime, these. xoxo

Walnut-Orange Cake
Tamale Pie
The Soup of 1000 Vegetables
Oh, those pancakes. We have adopted them as our own. So, so good with tangy plain yogurt and honey! Those and the rhubarb crumb bars are my favorites of yours, but I'm pretty sure I have those recipes committed to memory. Thank you for sharing with us!
ReplyDeletePot roast!
ReplyDeleteDone! But please note, also, the apricot pot roast in the recipe index, which might be *even better*!
DeleteThe recipes from the past that are not already here, that I'd like to request for posting here: every.single.one. Please! I am so glad I saved so many of the recipes into my Word program along the way, cause they are not-to-be-found out there in cyber land!!! How about a sidebar with links, sort-of and online cookbook/index. Seriously, I can't stand the thought of not having access to your repertoire! <3
ReplyDeleteEmily (had to choose anonymous from the list as it was the only option that worked for me!
There's a recipe index, Emily--in the upper right-hand corner! Click! But maybe you mean something else?
DeleteDER! Didn't see the recipe index... Thank you! And Bless your heart for putting out so many great recipes over the years. Many are stand-bys for me -- gingerbread, Dutch baby, Migas, pot roast (which applies well to goat roast, seriously!!), and so many more!!
DeleteI would LOVE to see you do a recipe book and we buy it immediately. :-)
--Emily
A second for pot roast, please!
ReplyDeleteDone! But please note, also, the apricot pot roast in the recipe index, which might be *even better*!
DeleteCorn chowder! Those ginger chocolate chip cherry cookies that are rolled in crack! I think I have both of these printed up and stuffed in a binder, but I'm asking for the greater good.
ReplyDelete--Karen (misplaced mama)
Actually I found the cookies in the index. Didn't see the chowder though.
DeleteDone!
DeleteMichael's brownies please!
ReplyDeleteThe chicken or tofu salad with the stringy noodles (that you fry and they instantly poof up) on top, please. Searching for that one recently when I found an ancient bag of the noodles in the back of the cupboard :-)
ReplyDeleteDone!
DeleteMeatless dishes that don't seem meatless to convince reluctant vegetarians, if possible?
ReplyDeleteAnything in the recipe index that works, Abby? There's a big section on vegetarian mains.
DeleteThe brussels sprouts: I love them. Never liked them before, but you converted me.
ReplyDeleteDone!
DeletePork roast with cider cream gravy and lemon sunshine bars, please!!
ReplyDeleteAny of your gift giving recipes/instructions!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat are you thinking of, Sarah? There is a craft index at the right. Is that helpful at all? Also gifts at the bottom of the recipe index.
DeleteHow could those pictures of your kids in their PJs make me tear up? Time needs to slow down!
ReplyDeletexoxo
DeleteCould you please post your smoked chickpeas and spinach? And potato leek soup? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteCould you add gingerbread and miso kale chips, please? I think you also had a really good chicken breast recipe, with mushrooms. And broccoli pesto, too! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteDone, done, done, and done!
DeleteDinner beans please! I have the recipe pretty much memorized but twice in the past month have fumbled around on Spoonful to check it. Thank you!
ReplyDeletethe brown stew
ReplyDeleteYes! But it is here already! Check out the recipe index at right, and scroll down to the meat. Wait. I'm not *that* lazy. Here it is!

Reading the walnut orange cake recipe and just about died laughing "Cool the cake completely in its pan on rack. Unless you want to pull it all apart into raggedy pieces, in which case you should try to remove the pan while it's still hot." You are totally hilarious at times!!
ReplyDeleteThe egg and tortilla breakfast casserole -- I was just thinking about trying to find it online!
ReplyDeleteI would be lost without your green dip (crudité) recipe, but googling showed it's already here on the blog. The index could use a link update though!
ReplyDeleteJust added the link! Thank you for noticing.
Deleterosemary maple syrup cayenne popcorn, please.
ReplyDeleteDone!
DeleteThought of more :-) ... brown butter fish; roasted broccoli cauliflower salad (I always liked this better than crack broccoli); gingerbread cake
ReplyDeleteDone, done, and done!
Deletehere are some faves of ours - its would be so lovely to see them here. Les searching and mild panic that they are gone ;) Thanks for doing this.
ReplyDelete- Whole wheat pasta with chickpeas and lemon
- Mexican chicken salad (the dressing us awesome ;)
- winter sunshine bars
- The rice bowls with the sauce... Yum sauce maybe? with the almonds and nut. yeast....
- and second to the sprouts ;
Is that enough to be getting on with ? ;) ;)
Done, done, done, done. And I think Mmm sauce is already here!
DeleteMmmm sauce - that's the one! Thanks so very, very much xx
DeleteI can't think of specific recipes to request, but reading through the comments so far is great. Some of the requests are for items in heavy rotation at my house. Some of the others I've never made but they sound amazing. Can't wait to see more of them migrating over here!
ReplyDeleteOh, and I'd love the tofu update to tamale pie. That's a recipe I love, but I make it with those soy crumbles, which I always think are weirdly over-processed. Somehow tofu seems more natural? Not sure that makes any sense, but I'd love to use tofu instead.
DeleteWill do!
DeleteThere was a no-knead bread (5-minute is striking a chord in my memory maybe? maybe not?) that is phenomenal. I'd love the recipe again please!
ReplyDeleteCould you please post the Beet & Walnut and the Zuke-a-Ganoush Dips? Those are my go-to birthday party dips. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteDone and done!
DeleteI would love to see your mac 'n cheese recipe here. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you! It is one of our favorites!! Served with a green salad with vinegary dressing -- heaven!
DeleteHow about chocolate zucchini muffins, brown butter whole wheat shortbread, beef satay with peanut sauce?
ReplyDeleteDone, done, and done!
DeleteChocolate cake (the one with the coffee), donut cake, plum cake! No-knead bread, pasta with ham and peas... :)
ReplyDeleteAngela
Brazilian Chocolate, donut, and plum cakes were all already there, Angela! Check out the handy recipe index! But I added no-knead bread and the ham noodles JUST FOR YOU. xo
DeleteCorn Chowder! I had it bookmarked from your old site but the link doesn't work anymore.
ReplyDeleteHow about those banana muffins? You do so much for us. What can I send you in return? I make pretty good homemade deodorant, but that's a gift with a weird message...
ReplyDeleteDone. And heart. xo
DeleteRe: the ethics of roadkill--it's moot. The . . . uh . . . substantial damage sustained makes the roadkill taste terrible. I only know this because I'm a vegetarian in a live-free-or-die state . . . not that I really thought your and Birdy's foraging interests would extend to roadkill. And recipes, THANK YOU. I'm browsing all the tofu recipes now for the high holidays.
ReplyDeleteOh my, I never realized those were tabs in your banner, and here I thought I knew my way around a blog...with yours being my hands-down favorite of all blog time!
ReplyDeleteIt kind of feels like Christmas morning, knowing that now!
Sheesh, of course those aren't tabs after all, they're a nice summary of what to expect here. (Been reading your blog on my "smart"phone, but just chose the web version and can see the lovely links!) So, please nevermind my comment above!
Deleteand p.s. - when I tried typing nevermind (which I know is two words but prefer as one) "it" wanted to change it to "be vermin"....really?!?
DeleteBut can you see the recipe index, on the right? I hope so!
DeleteYes, I can. Thanks!!
DeleteBaked pancake and Michael's apple pie!
ReplyDeleteBaked pancake is here already! (Check the index.) But I'm going to try to deal with that pie. . .
DeleteAdded the pie!!! xo
DeleteAm I too late? Hummus Among Us--I know it by heart but it's nice to have a link to pass on to folks that request it from me. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteOkay! I posted it! Thank you for asking. xo
