A Gift to You, for the Summer
Ready? It's this.
I have been making all my summer to-go drinks this way for years, and it just occurred to me to share it, because reusable to-go options can be so cheerless and/or toxic. Not this one, right? It's a large Luminarc glass with a lid, like these (if you don't want so many, look around: it looks like you can buy individual glasses, but the lids you have to get in packages of 6 I think) and a glass straw, like this. (Wow, there are now tons of glass straws online, I see. These were the cheapest I could find in a quick search, though there are some truly lovely ones. Also stainless steel straws. We've broken only two of our four glass straws in six years, which seems pretty good, considering that we have tile floors.) It's all machine-washable. No. That's not right. Dishwasher-safe. And eco-friendly and exciting to drink out of. The only problem is that they're too big to fit in a cup holder--but hey, if having too much iced coffee is a problem, I must love problems. Oh, wait, I almost forget: use an x-acto knife to make a small x in the middle of the lid to poke the straw through. It still manages to be amazingly leak-proof and durable: I've been using mine this way for years, and I can still use the lid for other things (needless to say, these glasses and lids are also a favorite way to store leftovers).
Meanwhile, incredible smoky, garlicky shrimp are here.
Have a wonderful week, and please do stay tuned: I'm going to be doing a massive board-games round-up soon! The fun is more or less nonstop.
Go to summer drinks...iced coffee...stop teasing. Recipes please!
ReplyDeleteI have never tried the glass and stainless steel straws, but I am going to get some for this summer. Probably the stainless steel, I don't have faith in our ability to not break them!
Love it! I, too, am a little wary of the glass straws, but am willing to give it a try. Maybe glass for me, stainless steel for the boys, at least for a couple more years. They want straws with every drink, and I never even knew there were alternatives to the disposables. Thanks!
ReplyDeletecool, thanks for the info, must say I've never thought of that. Might have to go with stainless straws also - the boy loves to bite/eat his straw. (would hate to find out how strong he is when glass is in his mouth.)
ReplyDeleteas an aside for jenifer: Ice & Coffee....:) Just kidding.
is it just me, or would it be easier if the links opened in another window?
ReplyDeleteAnd your recipe for the perfect iced coffee is...?
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big coffee drinker, but I love iced coffee. I freeze my husband's leftover coffee in ice cube trays, then the next day blend those cubes up with some milk and some more coffee (about half and half). Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm not the only non-coffee drinker who salivated at the beautiful sight on your post. Glass straws? For reals? Love it!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Now, bring on the board games!
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to get some stainless straws for awhile now; thanks to your link, they are on the way! As others have said, I'd love to hear how you do your iced coffee. Cold brewed? Just leftover coffee over ice?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip! I love to make iced tea at home and take it with me when I go out.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the board game round-up. My daughter is five and I'm ready to move on from Chutes and Ladders and Candyland. I'd love to hear what board games you and your other readers suggest.
I am unable to comment at Disney, but I wanted you to know how much we LOVED the shrimp. It was fabulous. thanks.
ReplyDeleteAnd where is the link for your AMAZING piece in O magazine? It is the best thing I have read about love & loss. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThis is in regard to your smoky garlic shrimp write-up:
ReplyDeleteI love you.
Love,
Allison
P.S. I thought you a lot recently because my family had "the barfing flu" a la Catherine Newman just last week! My own 3-year-old Ben was a veritable geyser, if you will ... ;)
FYI- Crate & Barrel has the large working glasses in their outlet (online) $19.95 for a set of 12. White lids sold for .50 each.
ReplyDeleteyou are my hero. f#%*ing awesome. and I've just ordered some. I have to say though that this will only add to the creepy/dorky dopleganger quality on that day that you are randomly rolling around los angeles and magically end up at my place for diner and a drink only to be served your regular daily fair as my 'personal specialties' which is what nearly everything I've tried from your family feeding blog becomes...
ReplyDeleteI have found a lovely (BPA free) plastic cup that came with a (very)hard plastic straw, but I am kind of weird and worry that it will get jammed up the roof of my mouth in any type of fender bender while driving (or even sitting, I'm very accident prone ;^) So I'm all about re-usable cups, but give me the bendy straws any day.
ReplyDeleteOMG, I was so, SO hoping you'd be posting a recipe for that delectable looking iced coffee in the photo. It looks like my ideal iced coffee drink. Which is very hard to achieve at home, by the way.
ReplyDeleteYay! Can't wait for the board game post. We have a closet full thanks to my inability to pass them up at thrift shops.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!
ReplyDeleteCatherine - LOVE (you and coffee)!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - If you right-click on the link, you can open in a new tab/window.
I'm sitting here thinking "Why didn't I think of that?" Great idea!
ReplyDeleteMy kids are going to love the stainless straws. I will have to go get some. Great idea. Looking forward to the board game roundup. We LOVE board games here.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the glass straws because my biggest issue with our current (plastic and stainless steel) ones is that you can't see when they're clean. My lovely husband makes smoothies several times a week and glass straws will work out perfectly for this! Thanks~
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this idea. Imagine if we all did this?! Being from Europe, where we do not use disposeables as much, this is refreshing to see.
