Hello, friends!
I am writing to tell you about FamilyFun's new kids' magazine, the aptly titled FamilyFun Kids, and to invite you to enter here for a free subscription.
This is a magazine for kids and by "kids" (okay, it's mostly the wildly child-like staff of FamilyFun, but still--lots of actual kids, including my own, have tested and retested all of the ideas), that is also blissfully ad-free. That's right: no ads. Which gives me a heavenly, let-freedom-ring, "Down with Poptarts and cold medicine!" feeling about the kind of copy we could write. Not that we would. But still. Look carefully in the first issue to see what I might have written for them. (Give up? It's the fortune-teller fortunes. I know.) You kind of cut the magazine up as you go, since it's full of little mustaches and other stuff you'll actually want to snip and use. And it's just fresh and funny and full of fun stuff to do, in the way that I like. "Optimistic" is what I want to say: kids aren't jaded capitalist brats! They're goofy fun-lovers who just want to use scissors. I love that.
Does it make a difference that the editor of FamilyFun is my best friend from college? No, but I can see why you'd ask. Or rather: yes, but only because she is, like, the warmest, funniest person on earth and she makes great magazines.
There's a really cute video for it here. And subscription info here, on the off-chance you don't win one.
Just comment here by Midnight on New Year's eve to enter the subscription give-away--though you have to be from the U.S. to do it for some reason (sorry, all you beloved Maple Leafs).
xo
My kids would love that magazine. I've been reading you for years and love you to death (in a non stalkery way :-) )
ReplyDeleteSign me up, please. We'd love to win too. (I, too, strive to love you in a non-stalkery way, however, I have been known to keep an eye out at Whole Foods and Judie's just in case). :)

ReplyDeleteMy kids already love the magazine -- especially your cootie catcher. Thanks for the props, Catherine!
ReplyDeleteWe would love that magazine! We already get Family Fun and this new one sounds great.
ReplyDeletePlease add my name to the hat on this one. I would love a magazine for the kids that wasn't loaded with ads and had good ideas instead.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm really commenting because I love your Red Hot Chili Peppers title. (We call 'em the Red Hot Chicken Peckers.) ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the lovely offer!
Oh rats...that is ok...I think I will still check it out, looks like a great magazine.
ReplyDeleteI would love my kids to have this magazine, because they both, my 7 year old especially, love to look through my old Family Funs, but I hate all the PopTart ads! (Among many others.)
ReplyDeleteI would love to win, and thank you for telling us more about the new magazine! I've seen it advertised in FamilyFun and wondered what it was like.
ReplyDeleteConsider me entered and my fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteYeah! No ads!!! Here's to hoping for a Hanukkah miracle! Jen VH
ReplyDeletePicked that issue up the other day, and we have been going fortune teller and snowflake and paper bead crazy around here this week. My three would love a subscription!
ReplyDeleteps. We made paper beads out of the bean and grain 'spot the difference' pics from chop chop. Those were our favorites.
Beth

ReplyDeleteThat looks like a fun magazine, we'd love to check it out. I'm not sure I've ever commented, but I love all your writing.
ReplyDeleteWe want it, we want it! Sign us up please!
ReplyDeleteYes please! My kids and my students would gobble it up!
ReplyDeleteHmm... I am posted as unknown. But I think I fixed that.
ReplyDeleteI'd love this magazine for my son!
ReplyDelete(I'm not sure how you know how to contact me if I win, but I hope we can figure it out!)
Ooh, I'm entering! My kids would love this.
ReplyDeleteIs it weird that I'm sort of sad about Wondertime when thinking about this? Maybe this magazine will be amazing and it will disappear too. (Martha Stewart also did a Kids magazine but it was done in a flash.)
I just pulled my salted caramel popcorn our of the oven - a double batch, one with nuts and one without - and the recipe is from Wondertime. Ditto our (your) camping list, and so many other small but wonderful parts of our days. Are any of the old staff doing this new magazine? I sure hope so. I'm not exaggerating when I say Wondertime was my favorite magazine ever. I'm just a little scared to love this new one...
looking forward to checking this mag out!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great magazine!
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog. Would love a copy of the 'zine. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWould love a copy. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSounds awesome. Thanks for being such a highlight in my naptime interweb browsing! Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteLOVE that it has no ads!! Also, I've finally just subscribed to ChopChop. I can't wait to get the first issue and get my kids excited to make dinner. And clean up after themselves. Basically make myself more and more obsolete. hooray!
ReplyDeleteOh great, now I've got that song in my head all day! Please enter me in the drawing. Everyone in my family is so tired of hearing me say, "Catherine says..." :)
ReplyDeleteCount me in for this. Also, my kids are getting a Chop Chop subscription for Christmas -- can't wait to get the first one.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like just the kind of magazine the kids would love.
ReplyDeleteYou are awesome. And I am excited to see a cool kids' magazine with no ads--stopped the Nat Geo Kids subscription because I got so annoyed at that. (And bought a ChopChop subscription.) Hooray for this!
ReplyDeleteWow, that sounds amazing! In the event that I don't win, I will definitely subscribe :)
ReplyDeleteThat looks fantastic! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou had me at mustaches!

ReplyDeleteI've been waiting for this magazine. Can't wait to see it. Even better if I win! I will give it to my kids and say, Be free. Oh, I have big plans.
ReplyDeleteI am so excited that this is AD FREE! Family Fun is cool, but I only read it at the library because I don't want my kids to flip through it at home and be seeing all the ads.
ReplyDeleteThis mag sounds great! I'd love to win it. My kids' would probably love it even more. Not only do they love to cut things--they wear paper mustaches, like, every. single. day.
ReplyDeletexoxo

ReplyDeleteHi, Catherine. I'm commenting here to enter the giveaway, but coincidentally I started reading your book today on the long car trip from Chicago to New Jersey. I'm really enjoying it!
ReplyDeleteNo ads? Wow!! I love that idea. The mag looks really great. We would LOVE to win a subscription. I think my kids would really love this, and just in time for the long hibernating months of winter in Maine. If I don't win, I'm definitely subscribing, so thanks for the easy link to that, too! ReplyDeleteHighlights was a low light for my boys who wanted more than just hidden picture games. Family Fun sounds much more lively!
ReplyDeletelooks so cute!
ReplyDeleteThis is exciting! My girl wants a magazine of her own so bad and isn't quite old enough for Chop Chop. Woop woop!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a very fun magazine. My kids would love it!
ReplyDeleteYes please - and like Alison T - I've been reading you for years and feel like I know you and love you - in the most non-stalkerish way of course.
ReplyDeleteahh! no ads would be so great. my kids are always asking to go on a disney cruise after an issue of family fun comes in the mail.
ReplyDeleteSuper cute video (and loved the kid in the healing rope magic trick demonstration ). My girls (and me too) would love this magazine! Maybe you'll pick us!??
ReplyDeletelove you, and love family fun!
ReplyDeletelove you, and love family fun!
ReplyDeleteYes please!! My little girl squeals with joy when Family Fun arrives. she would never let me read this one, I bet! More Catherine Newman? Definitely a must-have.
ReplyDeleteLooks like fun - like all the best parts of Family Fun!!
ReplyDeleteBonus that there are no ads...

ReplyDeleteYou had me at "no ads"
ReplyDeleteOh, crossing my fingers to win this for Gabrielle.....
ReplyDeleteNot really the crafty type. But what the hell. Who knows where 2012 will take me! Not to scapbooking though- that will never happen. Ever. But maybe it'll be a crafty year- we shall see.
ReplyDeletePick me! I love you and Family Fun! Happy Holidays!
ReplyDeleteI love it!
ReplyDeleteAn amazing magazine + no ads + a daughter who loves this kind of thing = YAY! Thanks for the giveaway Catherine! (but not for getting that song stuck in my head) :)
ReplyDeleteI have NEVER won an internet giveaway before....and this would be the one I would really love to win! Pick me, please!!!
ReplyDeleteWe'd be so excited to win! The 3 year old is dying to use scissors and the 8 year old could happily cover the house in glue and paint!!
ReplyDeleteAnything that is fun without a screen, I'm all for. thank you!
ReplyDeleteWe would love this. I have been a fan of yours for years, and yours are the only recipes I print and actually make. Thanks for the great posts and great recipes! Happy Holidays!

We'd love to win it...we already love Family Fun - Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt would be fun to win a subscription. I think my kids would like it. My daughter just made a tree house from Family Fun for her sister for Christmas. Have a great holiday season.
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect idea to keep the kidlets occupied when the new baby arrives in February
ReplyDeleteYou're my #1 go-to recommender. I believe whatever you write here.
ReplyDeleteMy girls love our subscriptions to Chop Chop! and mama's Family Fun Magazines. I just picked up a copy of the Kid's Family Fun magazine on the newsstand this week and my 8 year old loves it! She is begging for her own subscription. : ) Our fingers and toes are crossed.
ReplyDeleteand in a non-stalkery way...Merry Christmas Catherine, Michael, Ben and Birdy!
: ) MaryLea
do I even dare try? oh, yes!
ReplyDeleteThis magazine sounds right up our alley! Thank you for the chance to win and, just because I thought you'd get a kick out of this, my word verification for this post is "meati" - excellent!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter would also love to "read" the magazine (meaning, look at the pictures and want to do what the kids are doing), and she loves to cut and snip (as evidenced by all of her dolls' unfashionable, or, depending on your taste, fashionable, uneven crew cuts)! Sign us right up for the drawing, please!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I am the 127th person to leave a comment in hopes of winning a subscription, but maybe that is a lucky number? Can I tell you I think you're so great we are going to buy Dixit? And we subscripe to Chop Chop? Does bribery work?
ReplyDeleteMy three girls would love this! Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteOh, I would love to win this, as I am a huge fan of not only you, but Family Fun magazine!
ReplyDeleteAnd while we are talking about ad free magazines...for those of you with girls, check out NewMoon Girls...ad free completely moderated magazine and social site for girls with a strong girl-positive vibe...run by girls and much of the creative work written by girls. It has been a transformative place for my eldest daughter...they have book chats with authors, literary competitions, plus just a lot of fun! HIGHLY recommended...
ReplyDeleteMy daughter (9) loves the regular Family Fun - she'd be thrilled to have a kids version! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteOooh, new magazine! We love magazines full of cool kid stuff. :)
ReplyDeleteOoh- I'd love to win... and I guess I'd share with my kids too. Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteOh, please pick me I am very short of good gifts for my grandkids this year and all three have birthdays coming up. This would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to figure out how to write that "brrrrrt" sound that goes with the lyrics of the title. Alas, I will just say, I am addicted to you and magazines and so this sounds like 2012 heaven.
ReplyDeleteLooks great. Can't wait to check it out!
ReplyDeleteI would love that magazine probably more than my kids!

ReplyDeleteI'd love to win! We get Family Fun now and would really appreciate the ad-free content. And getting to read more of you! Thanks for the chance!

ReplyDeleteI must now go YouTube that Chili Peppers video, and behold them in their metallic body-painted glory! :)
ReplyDeleteThe magazine sounds wonderful! Please slip my name in there. Happy Holidays!
OK I might be jinxing my chances for the magazine by doing this, but I think that it's important to let you know that I think you have one too many "give it away"s listed. This is said only with love but I'm 95% sure that it's "Give it away, give it away, give it away now." (Went to a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert while pregnant with my oldest(about 6 months younger than Ben). It was great but I held my breath for a portion while some people 3 rows down were herbing it up and I was freaking out for my baby. I hope that you have had a wonderful holiday season so far and continue to do so! I LOVE no ads and will check out the magazine definitely!
ReplyDeleteWe would love to win!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds wonderful! I am going to get a sub even if not chosen. :) My kids love anything to do with scissors too. Hope you are having a wonderful holiday, Catherine!
ReplyDeleteOH Em Gee! It is like FamilyFun and MS Kids collided and their molecules reformed into the perfect magazine for my daughter. the same daughter who hoards and pours over the aforementioned magazines. Yea! Maybe I could actually get to read MY copy of Family Fun before the current season ends!
ReplyDeletePlease enter me in the contest to win the magazine! My kids and I enjoy Family Fun and I love reading your blog!
ReplyDeletePlease add me to the com[petition too. Glad to see you mafde the Babble list this year! It is funny how much you have touched so many people's lives!

ReplyDeleteOh, it can't hurt to try, right? We love Family Fun, and a version targeted to my girls would be grand. I hope your holidays have been lovely so far.
ReplyDeleteMe, too! I'd love to win this!!!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a blast! My kids would have a lot of fun with that. They get tired of cutting up old Readers Digests, lol.
ReplyDeleteMy kids love getting things in the mail--this magazine looks like a lot of fun!

Love to win the magazine. It's amazing how much kids pick up on advertising - I've been shocked by the things my own have said (ages 11, 5 & 3).
ReplyDeletei'm a sucker for mags that are well done and the kidness of this one when family fun has already caught my eye time and time again with its goodness makes it irresistable so i am crossing my fingers big time! :O) just finished grief of others, too and it was really good. keep the book recs coming!
ReplyDeleteTiA

This sounds GREAT! I bet Iz and I would have fun with it, especially I'd like the mustache part! xo
ReplyDeleteWe would love a chance to win that subscription. On your recommendation, we are now receiving ChopChop magazine, and my daughter loves it. She's planning to make Birdy's potato and pea salad today! Lovely picture of Birdy!
ReplyDeleteOooh! Oooh! Pick me! Pick me! I love you more! (also non stalkerishly but I have followed your writing for YEARS I tell you, YEARS!!) My children would love this magazine to pieces! Literally!
ReplyDeleteI think we'd love this magazine. Thanks for the chance to win a subscription!
ReplyDeleteFamily Fun is one of MY favorite magazines... I'm pretty sure my daughter would love the kid version! :)
ReplyDeletehoping to win!
ReplyDeletewondering if my 8 yr old reluctant reader or 6 yr old eager reader would love this more?
ReplyDeleteOOOh, yummy! We're ad-free. Love Chop Chop, thanks to you, and you've been a lifesaver for me since I was pregnant with my first when you were pregnant with Birdy in 2002. Three kids later (nearly 9, 6 and 2) I still consider you a lifesaver and still can't stop laughing at the internal struggle you expressed when your housemate was pregnant and you confessed wanting a third, but also not, and wondering if a cat was enough. I thank you every week your blog comes out. Your crackers and bread both figure in an annual science fair project on leavening that gets more involved every grade. Much gratitude from this California family.
ReplyDeleteThis looks perfect for my 8 and 11 year olds. Especially now that we have a 9 month old scooting around - the older ones deserve something just for them! My email, in case I win (hopefully!) is thebiermanns[at]verizon[dot]net.
ReplyDeleteSounds like this would be right up my 5 year old daughter's alley...
ReplyDelete
