Ah, you guys. So much advice on brown rice and iced coffee and Origami Yoda! So many loving words about a stranger's book. And Melanie, it was lovely to meet you in Thorne's. It is a beautiful thing, this virtual community. You are such a huge part of my life. Thank you.
"Beth" who logged in early under "Anonymous" is the winner of Jennifer's book! Beth, will you please email me so I can get it into the mail for you?
Meanwhile, there are recipes for polenta and Green Goddess Potato Salad over at family.com.
Favorite Board Games post and homemade hamburger buns: on their way.
And I wanted to show you: I bought this box of glass cigar cases at the flea market for $2.
And it's the nicest vase we've ever had. Keep your eyes peeled. xoxo
I'm looking forward to the hamburger buns and games posts.
ReplyDeleteNice flea market find! We only have one vase and we rarely use it. I'm not good at buying flowers. We need to start growing them.
Ingenious use of cigar cases! I did wonder for a second where you were going with that one cuz :)
ReplyDeletemuch love xxx
I love the vase!
ReplyDeleteyes please!!!!!!!!! to the hamburger buns.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm just amazed that you got to a flea market and that you were able to spot such a fantastic find. My boys would be wrestling in the stalls and otherwise make it impossible to find such treasure. We're driving up the coast this week to go to Maine. The clams had best watch out!
ReplyDeleteI'm still laughing days later since you wrote "or else they're from Whole Foods, and your simple cook-out turns into a refinancing-your-house situation".
ReplyDeleteOn that note looking forward to the hamburger buns!
Looking forward to the hamburger buns recipe, and your cigar vases are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove the cigar vase idea!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to try the polenta. It'll be a nice change of corn since all we seem to serve here in the south is grits. :)
oooohhhhh-- you are so smart. And ps-- my wallet and I love you for the working glass and iced coffee inspiration. Truly~ and it does fit in my cupholder! Go minivan:)
ReplyDeleteOh, what a beautiful flower arrangement! Isn't it great to come up with something that is so totally your own? (rhetorical question)
ReplyDeleteAwesome vase idea! It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWaiting with baited breath for hamburger bun recipe...
recession, what recession :) Thank you Catherine for your continuous good humour and nutritious recipes. Keep it going girl!!
ReplyDeleteHave you ever tried making cheese? I'm just thinking that would have been an amazing use of your 11 half gallons of milk . . . but a daunting thing if you've never done it. I've never done it :-) But I have the book, so I think of milk & cheese often. I'd love to hear how you approach cheese-making, if you ever do it!
ReplyDeleteI covet flea market finds like that. Nice one!
ReplyDeleteStill regretting not buying the 60's vintage stripper heels at the LB flea market. They looked like this kinda:
http://www.amazon.com/PLEASER-Kiss-201-Dancers-Stiletto-Sequence/dp/B001U9DJQM
But the platform was hollow and bigger and there was a piggy bank slit with the words TIPS painted on it.
I'm not clever enough to turn them into a vase- but I still think they should've come home with me.

I'm ELN5 over at Family.com. I just wanted to thank you, belatedly, for your Christmas book suggestions. We were reading James Herriot's Treasury for Children this morning-- what a lovely book! It has become a family favorite.
ReplyDeleteHA HA HA! to Jahlizz's comment!! Love, Mom
ReplyDeleteThe things a person can learn on Catherine's blog!!
Catherine, I was looking at your satiny chocolate sauce recipe, saw the Nehi bottle full of vanilla (and Mason jar of milk) and thought: a woman after my own heart. I love looking through Crate & Barrel catalogs, but I love using fun, saved bottles and jars even more.
Thanks for all your recipes! I continue to love your column even though my youngest baby is 22.
Just a quick note to thank you for teaching me how to cook polenta. I, the lazy cook that I am, would have been likely to treat it as "rice" and plop it in the rice cooker. Phew...
ReplyDeleteSince asparagus (or, as I like to affectionally call it: ASS-paragus), is out of season here in SoCal, I topped it with sauteed zuchinni and a homemade salsa. Delish. One change I'll make in future versions: leave the corn out of the salsa. Since the polenta is already cornaliscious.
catherine, this card reminded me of your romantic engagement story. cracked me up, thought it might crack you up too.

hold the farm, that link I posted doesn't have the right image. Well, click on this one and scroll halfway down the page to the valentine that says "you had me at health insurance".

I haven't visited for a while, but I just wanted to stop by and say hi. I'm sure you guys are having an excellent summer. You have to post a pic of the cigar holder/vase with flowers! I'm sure it will be lovely.
