Hi guys! For some reason the new column is posting on the home page this week. But you can find it here, where you will see many frightening things there. The specter of tooth decay! A wild beast! Roasted cauliflower! But you won't see this. Birdy's Charlotte in her Halloween bunny costume. Enjoy the rest of your week. And don't make me tape a paper carrot to your face.

That Birdy is the cutest thing ever! Of course a Halloween costume would require the taping of accessories to one's face.

  2. Poor Birdy with the no trick-or-treating... Is she feeling better? And that Ben... he looks like such a grown kid...

  3. It blows my mind how your kids are growing. Mine do too, but one doesn't always notice that on their own kids until they're all grown up.

  4. Oh, poor Birdy! Our little 5 year old got sick with the flu Halloween morning too. He was glad to hear he wasn't the only sad, sad kid on Halloween night. Today, he FINALLY woke up without the fever. Hope things are turning the corner at your house too. Thanks for the vegi recipe!

  5. Reminds me of my son! Almost exactly the same outfit! But he did with packing tape, which seems a bit more cruel...

  6. Hope Birdy is back on her feet!

The roasted cauliflower recipe is totally delish -- just made it, can't stop eating it!

  7. Tell Ben, from an actual evolutionary biologist, that it was indeed adaptive for people to like sugar so much, back when the only source of sugar was FRUIT, a source of easy calories compared to uncooked nuts and grains and so forth. Back when finding enough calories to live on was a touch-and-go, full time proposition. Now we are awash in calories, with our sugar-seeking gene stuck in the "eat Kit Kats" position.

  8. I wasn't sure where to leave this, but I thought you should know: your plum cake recipe, having proved infinitely adaptable, was put to the test yet again as Egg Nog cake. One less egg, a half cup or so of nog, and an improvised butter/egg nog/powdered sugar frosting. Let me just say: Holy Egg Nog. Yum.

  9. ...oh, and no plums. Duh.

    (love anything with capers actually)

Thanks for the candy-antidote Catherine. Too bad it doesn't work for the swine flu!

  13. Your daughter's adorable-ness slays me! I have yet to try any of your recipes, not sure why, but that cauliflower recipe might just be the one that turns the tide.

I love your totally calm reference to your daughter having the swine flu!! Here in Canada, it is the PANDEMIC OF FEAR AND PANIC, as we are essentially told on every news broadcast that our children will all die from the flu this year. Take a deep breath and relax people!
Less swine flu panic, more veggie recipes --the cauliflour is incredibly good! Thanks!!

How do we nag Wondertime to fix the posting problem? Last week's recipe STILL does not show up in the right place, and there is no recipe at all for this week. Or maybe there really isn't a recipe for this week.

  18. 10 is a wonderful, crazy, oh-my-god-we're-getting-close-to-those-years-when-you're-going-to-potentially-act-like-such-a-little-s^%$!, time. Enjoy it. And meanwhile, tell Birdy I've very much like to see a parrot costume and perhaps a skunk. Our dolls are in need of some funky fun dress up ideas.

  19. I know I should be saying something about your post (and of course, you are wonderful, so can you assume I've gone on and on?), but I'm too mad at Wondertime, like "Anonymous." I keep looking for you weekly post, and am repeatedly thwarted! Cauliflower salad is only accessible through your link here, and nothing for this week anywhere. Is that because there isn't one (which is totally cool) or because it's hidden out of reach in cyber-space somewhere (which is so seriously not O.K!)? Waaahhh!

  20. I just made the cauliflower salad, it is so tasty! Thanks!

  21. So, Catherine, I just have to leave a slightly personal note of thanks tonight.

It's been months and months since I've checked up on your blog but tonight I somehow found myself back here and it's been such a comfort to me. My sister lost her pregnancy last night, at 18 weeks, her first child, and I'm thousands of miles away from her, unable to get there and grieve with her, and it makes me feel lost with no idea what to do with my sorrow.

And this sounds weird even to me as I'm writing it, but there's something about reading about making food from scratch, one of my favorite things to do in the world, that calms me. And of course, I still feel like you're an old friend, passing along recipes, catching me up on your kids. I just had my fourth child three months ago, also named Charlotte, just like Birdy's baby. My oldest is six months younger than Birdy. I started reading your column when I was pregnant with him.

Anyway, thank you for all of your experimenting and sharing. I feel like I can go to bed with a sad smile on my face, thinking about all of the comforting foods I can make to heal my soul and nourish my family.

    Love to you and yours,

    Hadley

  23. Thank you "anonymous" #2 for the way to get to the new (instant oatmeal) column. And sorry, all, for my previous infantile outburst! It's been quite a week (can you say "piggy flu?").

My daughter is 6 too, looking at Birdy's doll with taped on paper is like looking at one or my Sarah's projects, there certainly is a lot of taping things to other things at this age along with a lot of "scissoring" as my son Evan (age 4) calls it. I really love this craftsy period in her life, I hope it lasts forever. - Kristy D.

  25. Ha ha ha! My kids do that all the time. It's the modern version of paper dolls I suppose.

LOVE the doll's bunny costume. My DD does the same kind of stuff. I never think to take photos of all her crazy creations though. I will start!
    So cute and funny!
Love checking back in on you guys - been a fan since babycenter. My DS & DD are close to Ben & Birdy's ages, just a little younger I think. I remember when you were imagining Ben having "big kid teeth" and I thought the same thing about my Ben, and thought, that's so far away. Then, bam, the baby teeth fall out and the big kid teeth force their way into those little mouths and take over those smiles...
