Dear Ones,
Over at family.com, you'll find
brown-butter whole-wheat shortbread (perfect) and
Mexican Brown Rice (imperfect but good), and also, gulp,
my last column.
If ever you were going to comment over there, now would be a great time (i.e. feel free to express your feelings). I'm also trying to gauge your interest in ongoing recipes, since I'm thinking of continuing to post them here. (And if you're new to here from there, then welcome!)
More soon, including the promised give-away, which I am getting to, I swear!
xo Catherine
I a so sorry this is my first comment. I have been reading you for 5 years everywhere I can find you. Brainchild, babycenter or wherever you were last. Please keep posting, and I bet if you tell us how much you got paid for weekly columns your loyal readers will all pitch in and have a community supported blog.
ReplyDeleteI've been with you since Birdy was a baby, and will follow you wherever you end up. And the recipes are always welcome.
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOOOOOOOO! I cannot believe it. I would follow you anywhere, everywhere. I too have been reading you wherever I could get my hands on you. Please let us know if there's anything we can do to turn that boat around.
ReplyDeleteyou guys are the best. seriously. xo
ReplyDeletewill make sure I comment over there! does it help to comment on past recipes?
ReplyDeleteThis makes me grumpy. I am scowling.
ReplyDeleteUnless this coaxes you into writing another book. Then I will wax poetically about the opening and closing of doors and windows.
But even if that was your decision, I would miss a weekly post from you. You've been so important to so many people. I am just one.
Hallo Catherine, just checked your Disney column and read the sad news. Hope it wasn't that we quiet readers weren't posting enough...? we are posting now!!! Where else could we have found recipes that have been such a pleasure to read? Even the ones with lentils (yuk)? ;)
ReplyDeleteOh Catherine, I'm so sorry. I've been reading you for years. But that damn Disney site kills me. I just tried to log in and comment for like 10 minutes and it keeps redirecting me and failing. It's horrible! The lack of commenting is NOT you. I know you know that, but still...Anyway. I've been reading your stuff since Birdy was tiny, before I even had three of my own. My husband knows who Ben and Birdy are without any explanation, given that he's heard so man stories about them. And I love the recipes. Please keep it up.
ReplyDeleteAnd here I have been thinking how stalker-like I am, because I too, have been reading you anywhere I can find you, since I was pregnant with my first child, who is nearly 11! Apparently I am just one of many! But please, PLEASE keep posting, anywhere you can, and especially the recipes, even though I can't say that I have actually TRIED any (yet!), they are very interesting to read!
ReplyDeleteHi Catherine,
ReplyDeleteI just posted over on Disney (misplaced_mama). Sorry I didn't do so more often before. I love the recipes and would love to see more, but I'm also happy to hear you muse on whatever you feel like. I'll call every ounce of your Little House on the Prairie sentimentality and wistfulness and raise you several. ;) And I also would chip in to keep your blog alive.
What the heck??? So they figured out you're actually too good for them? That your huge pack of discerning readers (who never comment over there because it's such a stupid and arduous process) would actually prefer that the Disney Corporation not exist, aside from your column?
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you try to pull together the kind of tasteful and principled advertising scheme that so many craft/mama bloggers have been doing in the last couple of years? If your readers know you'll post something a couple times a week on this site, we'll read it super faithfully and continue spreading the word, and you can get paid at least a big for writing here.
I have been reading your columns since you were writing at BabyCenter and I was pregnant with my first (who is now 7). I love the way that you write about your family and also all of your suggestions on books and games (Carcassonne is a big hit in our house).
ReplyDeleteI have made so many of your recipes and have shared them with countless friends (just had the lentil soup yesterday - the dressing is such a hit). Every Monday for so long I have looked forward to a new recipe, I will really miss them.
I hope that you will continue to post recipes and continue to write about your family here on your blog otherwise you will be sincerely missed.
Hi Catherine, I also have never posted but have been reading and following you since before Birdy was born. Please keep writing and sharing your recipes and articles with us. I look forward to your insights every week.
ReplyDeleteChristie
Catherine, I love you. Of course, I don't really know you, but after years of reading your column, and book, and various articles, I have an imaginary friendship with you. You have such a gift for writing; your honest, irreverent, loving, humble words always touch me. I'm cursing that megacorporation for ending your column, but hope that this leads to new adventures for you.
ReplyDeleteCatherine, I have been reading you weekly for, oh, forever (since you were pregnant with Birdy and I was pregnant with my oldest, Max). I even came to your reading at the Brooklyn Barnes and Noble, I love you and your writing so! So please, please keep writing and posting. I am not much of a comments person, but your work means so much to me that I had to chime in. xoxLisa
ReplyDeleteHi Catherine - I agree with LT - you have enough established readers who adore you (me included) that we would happily follow you to a new recipe site of your own that could draw advertisers. Let us know if we can help! -Alexandra
ReplyDeleteI am definitely interested in recipes. So sorry to see your column come to an end.
ReplyDeleteIt would be great if you could keep posting recipes on Mondays -- it would help with the transition. But whatever you do, I'll be there reading it! Let's hope this is one of those "when one door closes, another opens" moments. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry they're not continuing your column. Honestly? They're idiots. Your column was the only reason I ever visited that site. Your writing is so beautiful, Catherine. I really love reading whatever you write. I'll keep coming here, for sure.
ReplyDeleteAnd you know what? This just means something better is in store for you. This frees you up to be available for whatever that is.
The timing of this is so interesting to me. I'm a faithful reader and only occasional commenter (Disney won't ever, ever let me back in, I think), but I just re-read Waiting for Birdy over the weekend and was pondering sending you an email directly to tell you how many times your writing has, quite literally, saved me. At least my sanity and semblance of self-worth as a mother. I won't completely pour my heart out here, but I will promise that I'll gladly follow you wherever you write, and I'll try to be a more faithful commenter.
ReplyDeleteI am sure any lack of comments had to do with the fact that I found it actually impossible to comment. I really did try! This is such sad news. Your recipe column was a delight and if you are not thinking of a recipe/memoir book, you are crazy! There is definitely a book there and definitely an audience for it.
ReplyDeleteSo, thanks for everything and I look forward to reading (and commenting) here on your blog!
oh gosh, you guys, i hope you don't feel *chastised* by me, of all things, about the commenting situation. please. you're the best, and you know i know that.
ReplyDeleteI posted over there, so I won't repeat myself but I am so sad. So very sad. I've loved your recipes, and I love you! xoxo
ReplyDeleteAlso, keep posting your recipes. Please?
ReplyDeleteNo, not chastised! Just horribly guilty! (Kidding. Mostly.)
ReplyDeleteAs Misty said, this makes me very grumpy. I recently wrote a post about how much you have influenced our family. http://nowheymama.blogspot.com/2011/02/random-hearts.html
I look forward to your new posts so much. *sigh* Stupid Disney. I suggested a cookbook over there (as Sarahatf), but I also like LT's idea.
I'm so sorry.
I've been a huge fan since I discovered your column about Ben and Birdy. I read all the archives and shared some with friend. I've tried your recipes and laughed and cried. And I don't think I've ever commented. I'm sorry.
ReplyDeleteI'll go to wondertime and leave a comment there also.
I love your writing and will follow you!
Molly
I was already sad and now I'm even more sad. And it's Monday. I've left comments here, but never at Disney; and I'm very sorry. Please keep posting recipes here. And cookbook recommendations. I'm in love with Momofuko right now because of you.
ReplyDeleteCatherine, is there a way to subscribe via e-mail to your blog?
ReplyDeleteps: I just finished reading Little House on the Prairie to my kids and when the family had to pack up and move at the end, the homebody in me was horrified. All that work! The cabin! The fields and animals! But Pa (in his zen way) says something like "all endings bring new beginnings that are good."
I hope for you a new beginning that is good.
i am so very sad that your disney blog is gone. i love love love the recipes, have shared them sisters and friends, and i'd post over there is it wasn't so difficult and unhelpful to sign in. i tried and i guess i set up a name in the past that i can't recall (shocker). maybe you could start seperate blog for recipes? i read waiting for birdy while pregnant with my 2nd boy and laughed so hard my husband kept asking me what i was reading. i used to live in santa cruz and love your posts referencing that great town. disney is so lame, what is wrong with them? you are great and i hope you continue to post, recipes too!!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to see you go at your old gig, but SO HAPPY you'll be back here more often! Our kids (my son Max and your Birdy) are almost the same age and I've been reading your blog(s) since he was a baby. I have a feeling Max and Ben would be good friends, if only you lived in the Bay Area ;-). Anyway, just a note to say thanks for your beautiful informative writing from a long-time reader :-).
ReplyDeleteCatherine, I don't post nearly as often as I read (here and on Disney--which is a crazy-making site). I've followed you since the BabyCenter days and have happily gifted expectant parents with your book (particularly those expecting their second).
ReplyDeleteI love your recipes and, even better, my family does, too! Please add them in here whenever it makes sense to you. No schedule required!
I love your writing and hope you'll point us to where you land next!
Please keep posting recipes...it is something I have looked forward to every Monday for a long while now. Your posts usually make me smile and often make me laugh because I can relate so well to them. I am grateful for many yummy recipes as well. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI will be back to your blog every week- it has become such a habit in the last 5 years to read your stories and cook your yummy recipies! Thank you for keeping going!
ReplyDeleteLet it not be!! I have been following your blog, writing and recipes since Ben was just a babe. I look forward every Monday to your words and your food. Please don't stop. You have opened up my world to the whole grains! I'll keep adding exclamation points! Please, please continue your food here so we can all enjoy and just know* that if you came up with a cookbook or food book of some sorts I would buy it right away!
ReplyDeletePlease please please keep posting recipes (and anything else) here! I've been reading your columns since before my first baby was born (almost 7 years ago), and your writing is so lovely and inspiring.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about you losing your job, though :(
I am so sorry to hear about your job. I am hopeful it means bigger and better things for you & your sweet family. I share the sentiments of so many of your readers; your writing has such a wonderful perspective and has made me think about the way I parent and the way I cook, so truly, thank you. We have enjoyed so many of your words and recipes, especially the hummus among us, pizza dough torn out of wondertime is a friday night staple and that fantastic fearless bread converted me to a bread making maniac and haven't bought a loaf from the store since. The gratitude is all mine, my dear.
ReplyDeleteThose disney clowns really are fools. I just tried to comment over there but the redirecting and re-signing in was making me feel so hostile. Am hoping we can still print out from the archives.
Good luck to you in whatever lies ahead. You'll do great. I have no doubt about that.
This is my first post on your blog. Please please please keep posting your recipes and stories on this blog. I love your recipes and your parenting insights !!!!
ReplyDeleteI've never quite managed to log in to the Disney site to make a comment, so I've always come here. And yes, I want recipes. I make your Dad's Spaghetti Sauce exclusively now. And, don't get me started on the popcorn recipes! So, I'll keep coming to my Favorites tab and keeping up here.
ReplyDeletePosting comments everywhere today, because of the bad news! Reading all the comments, too. Wanted to mention here that I maintain what could be considered a Catherine Newman 'fan' group on Facebook if you want to join! I do my best to put up regular links to things Catherine has written. Search for 'We love writer Catherine Newman' if interested!
ReplyDeleteOh, I am sad to see the column end.. I've been following you forever. Yes, please post more recipes here! Everything I cook is from you. Well, everything good anyway.
ReplyDeleteI will follow you wherever you end up. Please please please continue to post recipes and stories. You help me be a better mama and a better cook.
ReplyDeleteCatherine, please continue to post here. My family loves your recipes. Donut cake, that pan fried tofu with the soy sauce, etc, quinoa sundaes - all big hits. Keep them coming! I love the conversational recipe blog. Please continue!
ReplyDeleteCatherine, I too follow you everywhere I can find your writing. I check this space all the time and would love to read anything you want to write, recipes, rants, observations and especially news of Ben and Birdy!
ReplyDeleteThe wagons have circled around you, girlfriend, and we will fiercely defend and fight for you always. YOU are the best. WE have nothing but gratitude to you for helping us to be more aware of now, to be better parents, and that part of that quest happens around meals. You have helped me to recognize that we are not all perfect parents but to be better parents starts with the recognition and admission that we can do better - and the fact that you put it out there in print for all of us to read, relate to, and judge?- you are a force to be reckoned with. And the beauty is that we don't judge you because we are all on parallel journeys. We love your honesty and we love that you are your own worst critic - so that we can judge ourselves less harshly for doing the same things and instead learn from you on what we can do to be better. I commented almost weekly on your recipes - our lives are going to be pretty dull eventually, if I keep on recirculating the same ones we already love. Would love to add to our favorites list. I am sure it is a lot of work to write the back story to the recipe - so I'll be happy with just the recipe. But then I'd miss you, your voice, your family, so I'm going to be selfish and ask for it all. stay strong, hold your head high - we will support you.
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. But, in the words of Carole King, where you lead, I will follow. Where else will I get my joy with a healthy side of wistful? All will be well- but this column will be missed.
ReplyDeleteThe only reason I ever went to the other site was your column. I didn't comment much because the site was a pain in the tuckus! I did sign in, just now, to say as much. Wishing you all the best. Please keep us updated!
ReplyDeleteOh Catherine, I'm so sorry to hear about this. Two things: 1) Have you looked into monetizing your blog? Check out Google AdWords, or something similar. 2) As many others have mentioned, you should write a cookbook! Correction: you've already written a cookbook (or most of it). I'm thinking in the style of Pioneer Woman. At least, I think I'm thinking of that style, with the recipes and the accompanying stories. I haven't actually read her cookbook.
ReplyDeleteAnd now, for a tesimonial. My New Year's resolution for 2010 was to eat more seasonal. In order to do this, I meal planned for every week last year (almost). I can't tell you how excited I was to be able to refer to my year-long meal plan when we got to Jan. 1 2011. And I looked back over the year to see what recipes I cooked. Many, many were cited "Catherine Newman." The way you cook is so similar to the way I want to cook, it was a natural fit. Thank you for making my New Year's resolution easier.
Just two weeks ago, in an effort to better streamline my access to your recipes, I created a link document for each of your recipes that I've cooked. There were over 75 links! And now, because of Disney, I will need to print them all out, because I'm terrified that they'll disappear into the infamous "Disney Vault." :-)
One more testimonial. Last night I cooked an entire feast for my mother-in-law's birthday. Butternut Gallete, Fearless 5-Minute Bread, and the World's Best Salad. I also meant to cook the Gingerbread, as a birthday cake, but I forgot! Whoops.
Anyway, what makes me all the more appreciative of your recipes is that they're so often vegetarian. My MIL is a vegetarian and I was so *grateful* to have so many delicious choices from you when planning the meal. (BTW, my dh, who is quite the carnivore, *raved* about the gallete. It's his new favorite dish.) Thank you.
Good luck to you in your new endeavors. Keep us posted, so we know when to buy your next book! :-)
Please continue with the recipes!
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah, I didn't say: we regularly eat buttermilk pancakes, egg noodles with ham and peas, chocolate cake as muffins (mmmm!), pot roast, fried chicken breast, fearless bread, donut cake cut in half with a layer of jam added in the middle, and crunchy oven fries. And an adaptation of brown beef stew for the crockpot (7 hours on medium)...
ReplyDeleteYears ago, when I had actual babies and discovered your BabyCenter column, I felt like I had stepped into a world I didn't know existed. One where mothers with serious skill can write about their kids--the mundane, the gross (all those stomach bugs), and the heartbreaking--with grace and honesty but without self-indulgence or preachiness. I printed off several of those columns and keep them in a folder of my favorite writers (the one about our love feeling a little like heartbreak...oy). I loved (still love) what you wrote so much that I started writing again too. Whenever anyone asks for a list of favorite writers, you make the cut. Actually, you're usually at the top. I used your name again last week in filling out an application for a writing grant, as an example of someone who has inspired me.
ReplyDeleteOK, gushing. All that to say, although it's been a while since I regularly read your recipe column, your Dad's spaghetti sauce gets made in my house at least once a month (and the tamale pie and the ham and noodle thing and the rhubarb crumble...hey, almost the right season for that one again!). I've checked in here when possible and always drop whatever I'm doing when I come across a magazine article with your byline. I remain an avid fan and can't wait to see what you do next.
Nooo! I just barely got over my Ben and Birdy withdrawal when it switched to a cooking blog. I am very grumpy at Disney (I posted over there as MamaLBAB), but like all the rest, would follow you anywhere. You have inspired me to cook, and most of my best recipes are from you. Please keep posting, tell us where all your other writings are published, and maybe we can find a way to chip in on this blog to keep it going? I would definitely pay you instead of my Family Fun subscription!
ReplyDeleteI tried to leave this over at Disney, and of course they wouldn't let me, b/c heaven forfend someone should have a comment of more than 1000 characters to write on the closing of YEARS of readership. So I'll go put something brief and rude over there, and put this here so you know how much your writing has been liked. You've been like a closet addiction among my friends - even the men - as our kids followed yours (mine are 9, 5, and 2).
ReplyDeleteCatherine...I am so sorry. I have definitely loved reading you. I didn't comment much, honestly, in part b/c it's such a HASSLE here, but also because FanGirl is not an identity I really love, and I felt like everything I wanted to say to you was always, "ohhh, me too! You said it just perfectly and me too! Oh, let's sit and talk and chat and I'll tell you MY ridiculous similar experience, b/c, after all, we are obviously FRIENDS." You have a knack for making people feel that, if we happened to be neighbors, obviously we would be friends exchanging wry commentary and deep laughter semi-daily. Your writing is astonishing for its warm voice. And that you keep any foot in academia and manage that is wonderful. (grumpy transitioning semi-ex-academic to your south here...) And your parenting wisdom helped me, through breastfeeding and pink-loving boys and oh, just any number of times the non-mainstream way my life developed confused me and might have made me feel bad. But it didn't, because I could always go read Ben and Birdy and there you were, making me feel perfectly sane and my kids in good company. I still sometimes think of your how-to tutorial on lying-down nursing. And I think all the time of your decision to stop writing about the kids, and if I'm and when I run into the same wall. And I am going to have to go copy down your plum cake recipe, because I cannot live without it and probably can't rely on Disney keeping it up. The fools!! The idiots! They definitely got traffic from me they'd have gotten no other place, and I am relieved to kick their crass plastic dust from my heels and just see you at your blog. And yes. Write another book. I'd buy it. And I will try to become more of a commenter over there. wince, wince. If I can't actually know you, I'd rather worship you quietly from afar. But if keeping quiet is making idiots feel you aren't read and valued, I shall just have to deal with it. Best of luck with everything.
Here is a copy of my post from "over there" (said with a little ugliness to my voice)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure this was a "business decision" and as I do not run family.com I have no say in your decisions. But I have total say on which websites I vist. And quite honestly, the only reason I came to your website was for Catherine Newman. I have read her journal/blog/recipe column since she was expecting Birdy and have followed here.. You don't stay at a hair salon once your girl leaves--you follow the good haircut and that's what I'm doing with her. Your site is way to difficult to create an account on or to log into and since you are taking away my only reason for coming, I'll be deleting my account once I've printed all of Catherine's recipes that I need in case I ever lose my own copies. Now, all of that being said, I doubt you will miss my once a week click on your website but I have a feeling you'll be losing quite a few "once a week clicks" which this decision.
See, I was so upset that I didn't catch my typos which I'm usually anal about but this isn't about me it's about you...
Catherine, I think you have a very loyal fan base who would LOVE it for you to turn your occasional blogging into a regular "thing". I have (just like I'm sure so many of your readers) been reading you since that very first post at BabyCenter, and you feel like the girlfriend next door. You and I have vastly different religious/political views but that doesn't detract from the fact that you and I and a zillion others are just all in this mama boat together and I really look forward to your articles and columns. So, please let us know where your next stop is whether it's on your own blog on a more regular basis or somewhere else.
Well, that's it for me and Disney media, then. I was holding on to Family Fun b/c that's what came after Wondertime, and every once in a while you had a recipe there.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry the column ended. I wish you speed in finding a new sponsor and know that we're all still here, cheering you on, waiting for you to discover the next Chinese carnitas or baked tofu.
Hugs. It's hard when jobs end, even when it is out choice.
And I don't feel guilty about not commenting there; I feel like their media people made it way too hard to do. And that is not your fault. There are better ways to count influence, like clicks and links, and I'm confident they can do that. Who knows what they are looking for. Clearly we are all looking for you, though not in a creepy way, but a "Yes, someone else who feels this way!" way. Hang in there.
I have been reading you for so many years that I would feel bereft not to hear from you weekly. Your voice has been such a constant in my life...I will follow you anywhere and read anything you choose to write about.
ReplyDeleteI've tried commenting there many times but can never get in. I have read you everywhere you've written, and have read your book more than once. I wish you the best and will keep on following wherever you go.
ReplyDeleteKeep your chin up, everything will work out.
Kristin
Well expletive, I hate to lose the Dalai Mama blog. Although if you continue to post over here I would love to continue reading about recipes and your family.
ReplyDeleteExcuse me, I need to go update my blog roll on me blog. I guess the benefit of your being over here instead is I will actually know when you update. Disney never bothered with that.
-Robin
I'm so sorry that Dalai Mama is going away, but I will read whatever you write wherever you publish it, as I have been since my now 10-year-old was 1.
ReplyDeleteI was a little wistful (I'm sure you'll understand) when your column changed from Ben- and Birdy-focused to cooking-focused. But I I loved that just as much. Your recipes and the stories around them are so, so good. If you didn't continue with them, so many of us would be very disappointed.
I have been reading you forever and will follow you wherever you go. Sorry this is my first comment!
ReplyDeleteI have been a loyal reader since your days of writing for BabyCenter (I think?). I will follow you wherever you go after this. You can't shake me - you're in my Google Reader!
ReplyDeleteI will ditto the many suggestions to continue blogging here, but more often. Recipes and random bits of tenderness and wisdom are always appreciated. Your Quinoa Bowls recipe changed my life. Seriously.
Catherine,
ReplyDeleteJust posted for the first time "over there".
Just wanted to say don't stop.
Please.
Recipes, stories, game round-up, book round-up. Being part of my family.
I will read whatever you write, Catherine, because I love you. :) I don't even like to cook, but I love to read what you have to say about cooking and, more importantly, life.
ReplyDeletexo
Oy Vey!!! Disney's loss!
ReplyDeleteI'm just so thankful I can keep up with you here.
Long time follower.
Jenn
This is awful, Catherine. You are wonderful - your writing inspires so many more than you know.Thinking of you...
ReplyDeleteYes please on the recipes! I love your writing (I've gifted your book to about 5 of my expecting friends) and your recipes are a bonus!
ReplyDeletePlease keep up the recipes :) I've been reading you since we were both waiting for our girls (8 years+!) and have loved expanding my cooking skills with your recipes -- 3 kids eating your granola right now! Thank you are every single thing you've written and know the CatheriNewman Fans will follow you anywhere ;)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely please keep the recipes coming. SO SAD to see you go at Disney, but hope that now that the door is shut, someone will open a window. Corny, I know, but the universe usually gets it right in the end!! Most of us will follow you just about anywhere!
ReplyDeleteYour was the very first thing close to a blog that I ever read, back at BabyCenter, and through its comment section I found the bloggers I follow now... I love you! And yes, please keep posting recipes!
ReplyDeleteOh no, no, no!
ReplyDeleteI now don't have any reason to connect with Disney on line, and so won't. Silly them. Very limited of thinking.
I'm so sad to loose this real part of my life - your recipes and stories inspired and sustained me both practically and emotionally.
Disney won't let me comment - they never have.. So I leave good vibes and love here.
Kate S.
I feel like I did years ago when I read you were leaving Baby Center. Sad. I wish I could somehow ensure that you would receive loads of money for all the joy you bring your readers but, short of sending you crumpled bills in the mail which would amount to nowhere near the appropriate amount, the only thing I can think of is another book. Please let us know where to find you. I'll always follow.
ReplyDeleteAs others said, Disney made it SO frustrating to comment over there. I've been frustrated ever since Wondertime folded and the only way I knew was because you said so. Sending some sort of letter or e-mail to their subscribers was apparently expecting too much.
ReplyDeleteI'm sad that you're losing the job, but really they weren't worthy of you.
If you were to self-publish stuff (for example, Wil Wheaton has started publishing his own printed books and now to Kindle!) I would totally pay for it. I miss your old pantyhose-wrestling, wistful-mothering, joyfully acerbic tales.
OR at least put up some kind of chip-in link on your blog.
Be well.
Catherine --
ReplyDeletePlease PLEASE put together a recipe book based on your blog posts. I will buy a copy for myself and everyone else I know. And it sounds like I'm not the only one.
Until then, please keep up your magic for us. I've been with you since before that dear Birdy was born. You got me through the baby stages, you taught me to cook for a family, and I need you to get me through the myriad of mid-life crises I'm sure are lurking up there around the bend.
Also, your Dad's spaghetti sauce really IS the best ever.
I've been annoyed with Disney for months and this just caps it off! I haven't been able to post there, and now can't even get onto their site for some reason. I've been a huge fan of yours for years, and will be happy to follow you wherever you go (as long as it isn't on the Disney site).
ReplyDeleteThis is my comment for Disney.com, that I can't leave there, just like any other week: If I try to log in, it sometimes lets me, sometimes says my "account isn't valid". If it lets me log in, I type my comment and try to submit it and then I ALMOST ALWAYS get an error message. I think I've successfully left a comment there 2-3 times.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I read your column there every week and have made many (most!) of the recipes. The reason I don't comment-- and I'm guessing why many of your loyal readers don't comment-- is because it is a RIDICULOUS series of hoops that I have to jump through, and it often results in an error message. Honestly, I read blogs and comment ALL DAY and don't have problems at any other site. Well, in any case, if you're not writing for Disney.com anymore, I won't have a reason to visit.
Catherine- I have been reading you since the babycenter days. Fun fact: I CRIED real, actual, hot tears when your column there was done. I couldn't imagine my week w/o your words. I know that sounds melodramatic, but I was in the midst of raising twin babies (a few months older than Birdy) and I DEPENDED on your grounding words each week. I was pleasantly surprised when you had a NEW column and ALSO a personal blog after babycenter! Life WOULD go on, after all!!
In any case, I hope you keep writing in some capacity. I love your words, I love your recipes, and I make your granola every week.
Catherine,
ReplyDeleteYou inspire me to be a better Mother.
And a better cook.
I hope that you continue to post recipes here and that your future is filled with better gigs than Disney.
Warmly,
Claire
Oh, Catherine!
ReplyDeleteI've loved reading your posts and cooking your fab recipes I've become dependent. Truly, your recipes have become staples, go-tos on a regular basis, for me and I am afraid of not having them anymore! I copied and pasted the majority of them to Word, saved and printed them and placed the hard copies in my old metal refrigerator crisper that serves as my recipe receptacle. Catherine Newman's ..... Boatloads of them and they are well used and well loved. PLEASE, I implore you, continue your incredible and valuable work of creating recipes and feeding us!!
Your food choices and creations have so well matched my own leanings, and also expanded my repertoire ongoingly. You have a gift and I encourage (OK, beg!) you to continue to share it!
As far as commenting on the Disney site, no thanks. They have always hated me there and made it so difficult to comment! Aside from your contribution over there, which seems oddly incongruent with "Disney," I really have no use for that site and will likely never click there again in my life unless it is to look up one of your recipes. Just sayin.
All the best, my prayers to you.
XOX,
Bette
I have been following you since birdy and my boy were babies. I love the recipes, especially the chickpea and lemon pasta. Pls keep at it, you shine!
ReplyDeleteHeart break to hear you lost the other column - you are my favorite site to visit as a Monday work break & I still go back and read old columns occasionally on Baby Center.
ReplyDeleteThe only reason I had signed up for the Disney site was so I could comment on your blog. I make your easy Sauteed chicken very often. We call it Winey Chicken at our house.
ReplyDeletei just gave disney a piece of my mind. it wasnt pretty. screw 'em.
ReplyDeleteI can't tell you how many of your recipes have become family staples! Please keep posting them on your blog as much as you are willing and able.
ReplyDeleteI posted over at Disney as well, but just wanted to say how much I have appreciated your writing over the years, and that I would buy anything you put out. You are such a talented, brave, hilarious writer and need to have the time to write. I sound like I'm proposing a patronage here, I know, but seriously, any way I can support you I would do it. You have been such a gift to my life, parenting and cooking.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I've had to read a goodbye post from you it makes me so sad, like my best friend is moving away again. And I know that I find you here as well, but I worry about your little family and I worry about how you handle moving on even though we have never met.
ReplyDeleteI love the food blogging, I love the games you recommend (We've become serious addicts to Ticket to Ride over here in our corner of the world), I love hearing abut your family and how it makes me connect with my family as well.
Stay well and upbeat-I'm sure your next great adventure is around the corner. I posted at Disney AND let us know how else we can help you!
Oh Catherine, all I can do is just want to cry. Like I did when the Ben and Birdy blog ended. It's me, 2kidslife, the constant stalker and adorer and cry-er. boo hoo hoo. I'm gonna post on Disney in a moment, but had to have my password reset, never remember it... and I am crying boo hoo hoo'ing here in our private blog land of Catherine adorers here first, I guess.... thank goodness there will continue to be this blog!!! (Are you feeling adored now??!! smiley face) I could not survive a Catherine Newman blogless world. Too awful to even consider. Thud. I can't write anything else, thud, miss you already, but you are still here on this blog. I'm a bummer, excuse me, I feel for you so much, your beautiful family needs that income from the Disney blog, and you share such wonderful recipes, along with photos and stories that are wonderful also... I will go write there now. Hugs to you on this March night.
ReplyDeleteI'll agree with everyone else who said that commenting over there was such a PITA that I never did it much. Couldn't they see the page traffic though? We were clearly there! ;) Please continue posting your recipes here. I'm not sure how I could continue raising my own kids without Ben and Birdy and you (and Michael too, I guess :) along for the ride. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI love your writing. I don't love to cook, but even your recipes -the way you make the kitchen in your home seem like such a fun place to be- are appealing. I will devour your words where ever you leave them.
ReplyDeletePlease leave them.
boo hoo sobby me is back. (2kidslife) I posted my comment on your last post there. Hey, you know how many readers here have said they search for more YOU to read??!! Can you please please pretty please don't be shy or modest and somehow list every single ALL every every place you write?! How many times have I searched Oprah's O magazine for you, in my desire to read MORE Catherine Newman??!! Like many here, I've been with you since my baby and your Birdy were babies... what a lovely journey it has been, reading your writing all along the way. Hugs and hugs and adoration!
ReplyDeleteAs I frantically try to copy and paste every single CatheriNewman recipe from that #$!%&(!@ Disney site, I am enjoying so much looking back through all of your wonderful recipes - but lamenting that there won't be a lovely new post from you each and every week. Sigh. I too am a long-time blog stalker and selfishly hope you will selflessly devote your every spare moment to continue satiating our need for good food and great writing. I can only hope this will be the impetus for bigger and better things! Best of everything to you.
ReplyDeletei found u on babyctr back when my almost 9 yo was a babe..oh, i so appreciated your geniune words then & now! please keep posting & i promise to keep reading. ps..jack, the 9yo i mentioned is hoping for ben's hair in a few years...honestly, i get tired of the "oh girls" comments we get, he has a sister & i miss seeing his face (its at the weird stage of falling all around his face), but i love his desire to not give in to all the bribes offered for a haircut...a real one. keep writing!,,,pleeeease:)
ReplyDeleteOh Catherine - I just can't believe it! I have reading your columns since Babycenter. My middle son was born a month after Birdy. I could never figure out how to post on Disney, but I loved your column. Your Buttermilk Pancakes are a family favorite! Please keep posting - I would love more recipes!
ReplyDeleteI just fell in love with your Dalai Mama blog via Brain, Child and am so sad to hear that it is ending! Please continue writing and posting your amazing recipes. You are such a gifted writer and chef.
ReplyDeleteI was so disappointed to learn about your Dalai Mama blog - I have read it every week and tried many scrumptious recipes. Please keep posting them - I'll keep reading.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for the many times you've fed my family.
I've been following you since you started posting over at Babycenter and I'll keep following you wherever you go :)
ReplyDeleteI will have to figure out how to register over at the Disney site to post there. I can't think of any other reason to use their site if you're not posting there!
- Claudine
Wait, are the Disney site recipes going away, or will we still be able to find them in an archive? Because if they'll be gone, I may have some serious printing to do..... Please make a book of them?!!!??
ReplyDeleteIt goes without saying that I would read anything you write and have been a faithful reader since your Babycenter days.
ReplyDeleteYour column was so much more than recipes and I think everyone would agree it is your way with words, insights and true sense of wonder and reverence about your family. Everyone knows that feeding your family is an act of love from you to them.
Disney is crazy to let you go and I am confident this will open a door to a wonderful new path.
OOOOOh, I commented over there and unsubscibed with another note in the comment section as to why.
ReplyDeletePlease, write a recipe book. We cook A LOT of your recipes all the time. I will follow you here- well, I guess I will follow you almost anywhere, as I have been since babycenter, but that is very creepy sounding!
I would subscribe to a blog that you wrote. A
Can you please give us a hint if there is a possibility of a cookbook coming? I really don't want to deal with Disney to print all your recipes one by one, but if I have to, i will. I'd much rather pay you for a book!
ReplyDelete-misplaced_mama (again)
If you do a cookbook I will buy it and give it as Christmas gifts to everyone I know. I love your writing and have been with you since babycenter. I give "waiting for Birdy" to all my expectaning friends.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I mkae soemothing of yours I always tell poeple where I got the the recipe, hopw to spell yourname and then I have to say, "Well I know it's on Disney but she isn't like Disney"
I'm sorry that Disnery didn't appreciate the amazing the person/writer that you are. Know though that although we don't pay your bills we surely would if you needed us to.
We love and appreciate you so much!! Keep up the good work, you know if you feel like it.
It's Disney's loss.
If you've seen any of their movies or heard their music you already know they have no taste.
With much admiration,
Valerie
Ah Catherine, my heart has been full of weepy sentiments all day, but now it's full of warmth. As of 12 hours post farewell, there is approximately 250 people, supporting you. Telling you how much you matter to us. Explaining how we are all striving to be better because you suggested it in a elegant and lovely way that is all yours. Many of us even underwent a minimum of 20 minutes wasted time to register with Disney to tell you this. I am proud of us now........because we are showing how proud we are of you.
ReplyDeleteLaurell. (ohmama-2007)
I just made a double batch of your spaghetti sauce so I could freeze some for a new mama. I have made so many of your recipes, I too followed you from babycenter. Please, please keep posting recipes. I am just so sad :(
ReplyDeleteYour first column on Babycenter appeared the week I learned I was expecting my first baby. Now, over eight years (and three beautiful children) later, I have read (and reread) every column, every week. You make me stop and think about the kind of parent I want to be, and forgive myself for the kind of parent I am sometimes, promising that I will try harder the next day. You have evoked my beloved northeast (you even visited the Farmers Museum in my hometown once) so perfectly - your writing made me wistful, grateful. You made me laugh out loud on countless occasions. Thank you, thank you for sharing your words and your family for all these years -
ReplyDeleteWell, if you can lose a job, I'll never feel bad about myself for losing a job again. You rock. I've been following you wherever you've gone, too, and will happily continue to do so. Yes, please, on the recipes and the stories, and all the wonderful writing that is yours.
ReplyDeleteI just posted over at Disney -- for the first time :-( -- despite following you for so many years. A few weeks ago, I got a new recipe program and spent one evening re-reading all of your Disney posts and downloading another 15+ recipes we had not yet tried. Everything I have made from your blog has been a hit and you have really encouraged me to involve my girls more in the cooking. Your recipes are wonderful, but it is your writing about the recipes and your family that truly make them special. Please keep posting on this blog, recipes or any other musings. I too would be happy to "subscribe"!
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOO! Your writing is amazing and your food is fabulous! This can't be the end of the recipe columns. It has to be just a new beginning, or a change of venue and format, maybe?
ReplyDeleteYou really, truly have a talent for writing, cooking, and getting people to cook new things! I totally agree with the previous suggestions that you should look into monetizing your blog. There are lots of different ways to go about it and I'm sure you could find something that worked for you and your readership.
There are plenty of independent kitchen and food shops that would be interested in advertising in/sponsoring your recipe posts (I know one for sure. Sign us up first thing!).
I also think a Catherine Newman cookbook/storybook would be a great addition to my cookbook library! My husband will always ask me if I'm making one of your recipes when he doesn't recognize what's for dinner. We have lots and lots of your recipes as regular favorites around here.
OK, enough cheerleading. Please just know that we are so thankful for your writing, food, and perspective. Keep it coming in whatever way you can.
Hi, I'm from the Philippines and I've been reading your Family Center blogs since my first pregnancy almost ten (10) years ago. I always look forward to Tuesdays here every week to read your beautiful posts.
ReplyDeleteCatherine -- Disney is so hard to comment! I only succeeded once!
ReplyDeletePlease find a new home. Your blog both here and wherever else it is makes getting through my work week just that much more enjoyable. There are no other bloggers I follow -- just read you and the NYTimes. Like every one else, I have been reading you since Baby Center and feel emotional about how big my babies are now and how big yours are too. Years later, I still recall bawling about that one post about you taking Birdy to the bathroom at your campsite and holding her hand. Wow! Other of your stories now, years later, feel like they happened to me.
I wish I had your gift of writing so honestly about my life and thank you for sharing your gift and life with all of us.
S. in Shanghai
Hi Catherine! I know the food blog is dead, but are you still writing for Family Fun? I love finding your stories tucked away in the magazine pages.
ReplyDeleteSo, if you're feeling blue, make some ANZAC biscuits but add 1/4 cup of cinnamon chips per batch (I get mine from King Arthur Flour). Seriously? Heaven. H-E-A-V-E-N. My husband gobbles them up, and he won't touch oats in any other form, including other oatmeal cookies.
Thanks for introducing me to the wonders of Lyle's Golden Syrup. Thanks for the cookies, and the pudding, and meal upon meal. I can't wait to buy your future cookbook, which I envision something like a Tessa Kiros book. Honestly I got Apples for Jam and was so mad at it for MONTHS that I didn't make anything, because it was organized by color! I couldn't find anything. Turns out the recipes are fabulous and the stories and pictures go right along with them. Now I can't believe I let it sit on my shelf for so long (the banana bread, vanilla cake, and rice dishes are some of our favorites). The moment your own cookbook is complete, I promise to purchase it!
Best wishes on your next step, whatever that may be.
Oh Catherine, I am so sorry. A job loss is always hard, especially when you weren't ready to be done with it yet. Peace to you as you look towards the future. We're all cheering for you!
ReplyDeleteI've been reading you since the very beginning of Ben and Birdy. And I will keep reading on wherever you go....
ReplyDeleteYes, do keep posting recipes. I loved them so much. But anything you post over here, I'll read. I may even comment on them since I can log onto THIS site, no problem. And I will say it here again (as I said on that OTHER site), I would LOVE to see a Dalai Mama Cookbook SOON!
I am so sorry to hear that you won't be writing at Disney, but I have to agree that the log in and registration process at that site is nearly impossible. I think publishing a cookbook would be a fantastic idea as many of your recipes have become family favorites and it would be great to have them in once place! Thank you for sharing so much of yourself with those of us who feel like we know you and appreciate your perspective.
ReplyDeleteI'm another one who has been reading you since the BabyCenter Days, and would miss not seeing a regular post from you!
ReplyDeleteTried posting on your final post, but it just didn't work...
First time commenter, long time reader, from your first post in bbc about camping at Cape Cod and Ben's visit to the zoo-aquarium. Have kept reading your posts here and at Disney through three country-, and a continent-, moves. Never tried a single recipe (I cook only under duress, also an Indian who eats differently and has never tasted rhubarb!) but I have gobbled up every single post for the stories and photos and parenting wisdom. I know this doesn't help now, but the Disney site assumes that all your readers will have a US zip code, w/o which I was not able to create a profile when I tried once many yonks ago. I didn't try again because I felt I had nothing much to contribute since I didn't use the recipes and would probably say things which other readers said much better than I ever could.
ReplyDeleteWherever you write, whatever you write, I will follow you there. Thank you for sharing your world and worldview.
Hi Catherine - I'm one of the gang who 1) have been following you since Babycenter and 2) hated the fascist Disney sign-in procedures. But I love love love your column/blog/stories and will keep reading you anywhere! Much luck in your next endeavor and I'm so glad you're still writing!
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else, I have been reading you for years, wherever you were (I even got to meet you at a reading of Waiting for Birdy in Putney VT). But I have never commented until now -- hated the sign-in thing at Disney. They are crazy to lose you. I am just hoping that you land somewhere better. How can we help you make that happen?
ReplyDeleteYour corn chowder recipe amplified my husband's love for me, BTW...
I've been reading you since babycenter, since I was pregnant, and I cried over the story of Ben on the camping trip and he asked so so sweetly to please know what the dog's name was...Catherine, you are such a talented, natural writer, and your recipes have become part of my family's regular repertoire. Please publish a cookbook if that is your heart's desire, we'll snap it up! We would love to continue reading your stories mixed with recipes here at your blog, too: I've so looked forward to reading you every week it would be sad to lose that. (I show the pictures of Ben and Birdy eating your wonderful dishes to my own child to encourage him to try new foods.)
ReplyDeleteOne more person agrees with all of the above. You are beloved! With so many wishing wonderful things for you (if only so we can enjoy reading about their beauty and wonderfulness and so much that we feel almost there with you), I feel certain something fabulous is brewing.
ReplyDeleteCatherine,
ReplyDeletebecause i am a novice commenter (see, never), I just wrote a very heartfelt comment, and it didn't work.
I shall try again.
I have been reading you as long as (even before) my first child was born nearly 8 years ago, and faithfully ever since. I have never commented, much to my chagrin, but please know how much i have appreciated your words. They have been a source of guidance, humor, patience, and most recently, food, for myself and my family. I have watched Ben and Birdy grow up with my own three children. You have set a tremendous example for raising kind, considerate kids, who still have a great sense of humor.
You have the unique ability to capture the particular hilarity that is mothering, parenting, being human. You also have a way of describing things that captures the "harriedness"- if that's a word, of being a mother that is spot on. You often remind me, in the nicest possible way, of Erma Bombeck, if Erma had ever occasionally cursed.
I would comment on the disney site, but can't seem to make it work.
I will continue to read you where ever you go, and would happily buy my very own copie of any more books you might choose to write (a dalai mama cookbook, perhaps?). I have my own copies of Bitch in the House, and Waiting for Birdy, and ongoing subscriptions to Brainchild and Oprah, hoping to see your byline.
Wishing you all the best, and hoping this is just the next step to something better.
Aw, Catherine. I posted over at Family Fun but just wanted to say again that you have a huge audience waiting for you, wherever you go. I'll miss your column, it was a little bright spot to look forward to every Monday. Please continue posting recipes often, anywhere and everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI'm irritated that I can't figure out how to voice my discontent on the Disney Family website. Please keep your recipes coming, and keep sharing your unique and uplifting writing with us. :)
ReplyDeleteWe are sharing your heartbreak right now but please know that with all this love you have surrounding you, it's going to be alright.
ReplyDeleteI, too, am totally willing to pay to read your posts. Consider it, if this makes sense to you (I have no idea how these things work).
We love you. --Cathy K ("cefkennedy")
Catherine, I'll read anything you write, anywhere it appears. I'm a better parent, a better cook, a better person because of everything you've shared over the years. I'm thinking good, good thoughts for you . . . that's one way of praying, for those of us who do that sort of thing. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry that you lost your job with Disney- I am never sure how I feel about Disney, and this hasn't helped their case in my book AT ALL!!! I have been reading your writing since Babycenter and I was pregnant with my almost 8 year old *sniff, sniff* and I will miss your new blog almost as much as I miss your old one!I have given your book to countless pregnant friends!! You inspire, and make me laugh or cry with almost every post! Please keep writing ~ I'd miss you terribly!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your recipes,
ReplyDeleteIve used many, and so wonderful!
And equally, your presentation.
I've been reading your columns & blogs for almost ten years ... maybe more?
Please don't stop!
Please continue the recipes. They are very much appreciated and loved.
ReplyDeleteHello, I have commented, once or twice, but I'm not much good at this technology stuff! I say good riddance to Disney, I know you will land on your feet, and like others have said, we will find you. And yes, please with your recipes! I am a food snob on many levels and yet, yours are the best recipes we make here. You are always so thoughtful, your recipes accommodate my young childrens needs, both nutritionally and emotionally ( I hope that makes sense) as well as aesthetically. They are family recipes, truly. And like you said, what else do we have? Please do continue to post whatever you feel moved to, it is always, always a pleasure. I hope we do give something back.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I second the call for a cookbook. Any publishers. Out there?
Like so many others, I never comment (shame on me) but I do follow you wherever you go. I read several blogs now, but you were the first! I love your recipes and hearing about you and your family.
ReplyDeleteLike so many commenters above, I tried and tried to comment at the Disney site but was always thwarted! I would love to get more of your recipes here (or wherever) and I do check in here often to see what's up!
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
I've been with you since the beginning, when Ben was a baby. I will follow you wherever you go. I don't even cook and I still live for your columns! Good will come your way. xoxo
ReplyDeleteOh, crapola-- I've tried over and over to register on that other stinkin' site so I can comment away, noting that I only visit to read your column (which I absolutely love). Anyhow, even though I've submitted to a Disney name and all I still can't get it to work...
ReplyDeleteI want you to know I think your writing is absolutely lovely. I can't think of anyone else who writes about motherhood and everything it entails in a more poetic, honest way (including the messiness and rough-edged beauty of it too). It's always hard for me to see past the door shutting, but there is a lot to that old "something closes and another thing opens" idea. There's a window opening up for you-- I'm sure of it.
--Beth
I'm not a comment poster...but I did on the Disney sight...I found you 8 years ago right after my daughter was born but well b/4 I knew my son would arrive 21 months later! I read every post...laughed and cried more times that I could count and like most felt like you were speaking right to me...even though on the surface our lives are not alike...AT ALL...but really they are...I listen to popular radio, care what clothes my kids wear, I don't buy organic...who cares!?! I connect with you and your family...we all want our kids to thrive...we all want to know we are doing the right thing...different families go about it in different ways...it's what makes the world go around...right? I'm sorry you lost your blog at Disney. I hope there is something more amazing looming in your future. Wishing you all the best.
ReplyDeleteYour blog is bookmarked on my screen and I am always cheered when I can hear your wonderful writing voice. Whatever you do, I'm out here waiting to read it so I can laugh out loud and cry a little. (:
ReplyDeleteI'm sad to see the end of your Dishes blog -- I adore your recipes (as much for their deliciousness as for your amazing ability to express so much emotion and humor and wit). I love your blog here as well and hope you will continue to post recipes.
ReplyDeleteI have made quite a few of your recipes and many, many of them are now favorites that I make often for my family. I'm sorry I haven't ever said how much your writing means to me.
Thank you for being you.
xoxo
Just de-lurking to join those saying: to hell with Disney --- your readers will follow you to whatever web site you continue to post to -- put a Paypal button on there, or get some advertisers and bypass the middleman. Love the recipes; love the writing. Whatever you do, don't quit now.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to see your blog about food ending. I have enjoyed it very much. I first read your writing and recipes in Wondertime which also sadly died an early death! I hope this door shutting will be a new opportunity in disguise. Best wishes
ReplyDeletewell, now, this is just a travesty: i go away for the weekend and the world freaking GOT WORSE.
ReplyDeleteWhat sad news, sad sad news. I mean: yes, gratitude, the here and now, etc, whatever, this is SO SAD.
I make your plum cake all the time. please keep posting more: about cake, and about being a mindful parent in these hard times. much gratitude from LA.
I am not a frequent poster, and I don't even know why. I will comment from here on out here and there and everywhere as long as I get to keep reading you. I agree with the other posters that a new book would be great. A recipe book with all your witty comments and plenty of pictures would definitely go on my gift list for pretty much everyone I know.
ReplyDeleteI don't even acknowledge Disney except for your column. I'm willing to pay a subscription fee!
I'm on my way right now to comment at Disney.
Ok, just back from Disney, I didn't realize the column had already ended. I'm so sorry. Your columns are beautiful. I do love your recipes, but I'd read anything you wrote.
ReplyDeleteI am about to re-read your book as I just found I'm pregnant with my second. I can't wait to go on the journey with you and your writing all over again.
I believe that an even better opportunity is on the horizon for you. I wish you all the best in whatever endeavor you choose and congratulate you on the possibilities.
I love you! (is that weird? to feel like I know you and we're real friends?)
Oh pretty please with sugar on top keep writing on this blog! I adore your writing wherever I can find it. I love your recipes and will head on over to comment my ass off for Disney...
ReplyDeleteDo not stop! I am constantly checking for your posts. Please. Do. Not. Stop. I. Need. This.
ReplyDeleteLike so many others, I have followed you since your Baby Center days. I still comment about the chapter in Waiting for Birdy which compares you eating from the fridge while Birdy is crying, waiting to be nursed, to putting on your oxygen mask before you put on hers. I have used this terminology with many new mom friends! I hunt down and soak in what ever you write, where ever you write. I read countless recipies "over there" just to read more of your writing, having never made a one! Thank you for sharing yourself with us through your writing. We appreciate and love you!
ReplyDeleteScrew Disney! Now I'm really never taking my kids there for vacation...Grand Canyon is way cooler anyway...I just hope they aren't letting you go because we didn't post enough...if they would make it possible to post on their stupid page without a 20 minute process...Thanks for being HERE for us, and if you find another forum to share with us that profits you let us know and we will all comment to the moon and back for you. Promise.
ReplyDeleteWill your recipes stay there, archived, or do I need to start obsessively printing the ones I have yet to make??? Or is there a cookbook I could pre-order on Amazon? I love your recipes, I love your writing. I'm glad you're not going away, that would be so sad.
ReplyDeleteI actually went there to comment...and CAN'T log in! Which is not the first time, but I'm sure you know this already. Frustrating. I'll try again later this week.
ReplyDeleteYou are one of my heroes and I'll keep reading you wherever you are.
ReplyDeleteFancy new blog - love it, I haven't even read all the comments here or the 182 (so far) at that (now) evil Disney site but I can't wait - I'll still be coming every day (do you have a feed, I've really never been able to figure them out anyway and would likely just check everyday anyway), and yes I'd love some more recipes, but really everything you write I love - and I would even understand if you start to get some advertising - everyone has to eat!
ReplyDeleteAnyThingForBenBirdy
Catherine -- like so many other people I've been following you slightly obsessively since babycenter, but never commented. Last week I made the mexican rice, which my husband just LOVED. So I overcame my inhibitions and tried to comment on the disney site but gave up after 30 very frustrating minutes. Please keep going.
ReplyDeleteDisney FAIL. Please keep writing here and also, um... how bout a cookbook?
ReplyDeleteOh, sad, sad, sad.
ReplyDeleteYes, please do continue posting here. We Lurve you!
Oh, and might I compliment you on your paint chips? I'm guessing the green chip was all about, um, "envy."
I first started reading your amazing column on Babycenter when I was pregnant with my first child. I then delighted that you were a columnist for Cookie magazine. My neighbor let me know that you had an amazing blog and your recipes are some of my favorites. Please keep writing.
ReplyDeleteYou are making me cry Catherine! Don't leave us- you have helped me so- with my baby, my family and the answer for what's for dinner ( I make so many of your recipes!). Please keep posting here, recipes, stories, whatever you want!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Your latest/last? article in Family Fun (about the cat) had me rolling on the ground in laughter. Your stories are SO true to my life and you capture it all in the most comical way! Your writing is pretty much the only worthwhile thing in that magazine. I hope you continue to blog here, and I will look forward to hearing more from you in Brain, Child!
ReplyDeleteI think I first discovered your writings through Wondertime (which is still my favorite "parenting" magazine to date) and have since enjoyed your book and columns elsewhere. Even though in many ways your family is different than mine, I truly enjoy your often humorous stories of your family and feel your love for them.
ReplyDeleteI just couldn't comment at first, although I did send an angry email through the family.com website which made me feel a little better.
ReplyDeleteLike many others here, I've followed you for years, and will follow you whereever you go. You have a touch that makes this parenthood journey just a little more special, expressing an idea or a feeling that was brewing but I just didn't see it, or bringing new books, games, ideas and recipes into our life. A richer experience for having Catherine in my life!
So keep on bringing us your magic, whether magazines, blogs, books, podcasts, a 24 hour cable channel (Catherine Newman Network? Oh wait, CNN is taken....). Wherever you go, just let us know where to find you! xo
I, like so many others, have followed you forever, still have a stack of old BabyCenter posts of yours that are especially meaningful for me. (Ben, watching the looping floor washing machine, OY.) As I said over at Dalai Mama, I cannot understand why a decision like this was made. Your posts are not just about the recipes, which are SO VERY AWESOME, (your pork roast with cider-cream gravy was an instant hit with my entire family, which is an exceptionally rare and marvelous occurrence, and somehow I just feel better about life in general with a jar of your dill pickles in my fridge), but about how to go about nourishing your family. You really are a voice like none other out there, and I selfishly want to continue reading you whenever and whatever you do…recipes, mmmmmm yes please!, back to the old BabyCenter type of posts, I would so dearly love to hear something like that again from you, I love the game and book posts, loved that FamilyFun magazine, your article on the birds and the bees for kids was so great and so timely for me, and has been squirreled away to keep forever as a reference, I love it all, and have always been able to take something useful away from each time I have been privileged enough to read you. Each and every single time. The way you write is so human, so friendly, the things you have shared and the way you have shared them have changed the way I parent. I cannot thank you enough, and please know that I will continue to buy whatever you are in and hope that you continue to blog as well. Much much love to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteIt turns out that I, like so many of your readers, am a terrible poster of comments on the internet. I'm sorry about your Disney column. I read you every single week and most of my recipes are yours. I really hope you keep posting them a well as your thoughts on life, cooking, parenting. My best friend and I have been reading you since you were pregnant with Birdy and now I am a parent of a baby and I have learned so much from your writing. You help me remember to be more present with my own little one. Thank you for all you share of your family. And when are you making a recipe book? Now I have to go steal all your recipes off Disney!
ReplyDeleteYes, more recipes please.
ReplyDeletexoxo to you, too, my dear.
Keep posting recipes or anything at all. You're one of the coolest writers out there, even when I disagree with you. I, too, have followed you around the internet for the past eight years. Please write more books! (How is it possible that Kate Gosselin has THREE and you only have one?)
ReplyDeleteIn addition to commenting over at Disney, let's do a write-in campaign to keep Catherine's blog going over there! Their address for sending feedback is:
ReplyDeletesupport@disneyfamily.com
Catherine, I loved your column and it was the only thing I ever looked at on family.com. The recipes were fantastic. The tortilla-egg casserole absolutely made our Christmas morning and it has since become one of our family's favorites. Please, please, please continue to post recipes on the blog!! I have been reading your columns since Birdy was a baby, and I own and LOVED your book. Can't believe they were fool enough to let you go . . . but don't worry. Someone will snap you up before too long. You are a fabulous writer!
ReplyDeleteAggh! I am so glad to hear that you will be continuing to write here. I have been reading since Baby Center and have followed you everywhere since. First Wondertime and now this, Disney is clueless. I so look forward to checking in every week. I found you when my 9.5 year old son and almost 7 year old daughter were 3 and under a year and Ben & Birdy were just a year or so older than them. I can't thank you enough for all your wonderful words and recipes and photos over the years. Your writing and family are so lovely and I am so glad I will still be able to find you here.
ReplyDeleteI have never commented anywhere (and there are probably a lot of people like me), but did want to let you know that I will follow your column anywhere I can find it. I was so sad when wondertime went under and just recently re-found you on disneyfamily.com.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the recipes. Even when I don't cook them, I love reading them.
Thank you to Tina for posting the address for feedback to Disneyfamily. I have sent an email to them.
I have never looked at anything else at Disneyfamily.com except your column and will not be back... unless they see the error of their ways.
I've also been reading you since Birdy was born and my kids are 8 and 6. Please keep posting!!
ReplyDeleteI am SO excited to try your browned-butter wheat shortbread. I have decided that I, officially, love butter and the scent of browned butter, as you said, is heavenly. I'm baking more and more with wheat flour, but I, too, am a fool for a white baguette...I just can't give that up!
ReplyDeleteThank you for all of the PHENOMENAL recipes!
I would love to read more of your wonderful recipes. I'm so sorry that Disney is being silly and shortsighted. Onward to other wonderful opportunities!
ReplyDeletePs I check this blog multiple times a day. Addicting.
ReplyDeleteMe too! I am also a loyal lurker who has followed you since babycenter. I will read whatever you write wherever you write it. I commented over at Disney, but I wanted to add my support here as well. I've bought games you've recommended and have significantly expanded my recipe collection with your columns. (The Fearless Five minute bread really did cure me of my fear of bread-making!)
ReplyDeletePiling on for the love fest as my anonymous self, though I've emailed you before too. I too will follow you to read wherever you're writing, and would happily chip in to keep reading you (or faithfully click through to advertisers). And never commented over there, though I read you oh-so-regularly, because, gah, the process. Just one question: are the recipes going to be archived? because I've never printed them out, but I don't want to lose them. Published cookbook, please?! pretty please??!
ReplyDeleteOh no! It's like the end of Bringing up Ben and Birdy all over again. Please, please don't stop writing regularly. What will we have to look forward to on Mondays? The only reason I was glad I joined babycenter was because I found you there just before my now-six-year-old was born. Like so, so many others, I've been loving your writing for years. And, um, yes, please continue to share recipes here.
ReplyDeleteAlso, now I don't feel so bad about always pushing that little "I found this helpful" button before I even read each recipe. I only wish I had pushed that button twenty-seven more times each time I read a recipe.
ReplyDeleteAny word on how long we'll still have access to your recipes? I still return to Bringing up Ben and Birdy archives and I know I'll do the same with Dalai Mama Dishes, if I can.
(p.s. I am/was picsmamma over there. And, I just turned another family on to your kale slaw. So, so good.)
After I recover from my very selfish reaction, I will pull myself together and post my outrage on the Disney site.
ReplyDeleteLike most of the other contributors, I have followed you forever. My family wouldn't eat without your recipes!
Please let us know what is next for you -- I'll be there in a heartbeat.
Totally stupefied, Disney is nuts. However, I am not, so I will follow along here. I LOVE to read everything your witty self says, and I REALLY love the recipes, so PLEASE keep them coming. Sorry for you, Sorry, for all of us, but I know something better will turn up. How about another wonderful book??? You are loved and admired! Kim
ReplyDeleteOh Catherine! I have been reading your wonderful words since I became pregnant with my first child nine years ago! And I have loved EVERY piece you have written. Your recipes and stories feed my stomach and my soul. I feel great gratitude for you and your wisdom! I will read you where ever you are. I always read your blog and the Disney column anyway. So keep posting your thoughts and your recipes!!
ReplyDeleteLove you!
There is nothing much more to add that hasn't been said...I have been reading your blogs forever (My oldest was born just a few days after Birdy). I have made many many of your wonderful recipes (LOVED the summer pasta with corn, also the red chicken, also the bread...). I took the cheesemaking course on your recommendation (We live in Providence, so I made the drive to western MA!) I feel like I know you and your kids after all these years... You have inspired me to be a more mindful parent. I have read many great books and found fantastic web sites thanks to you. Thank you for all you have done and I will continue to be a huge fan of yours, no matter what Disney says or does. :)
ReplyDeleteAdd me to the list of those who have never posted but have been faithful readers for many years. LOVE the recipes (which are almost always favorites with the whole family, even the lentil soup!) and you cannot imagine how excited I was at the game list. (My husband got Carcassonne for his birthday and we've been playing it at every opportunity ever since.) Would love to have the column continue in any form. And if you were to publish a book with all the recipes and stories that are on the Disney site now, I would buy it for myself and all my friends. (Am wondering if I need to start frantically printing everything out?)
ReplyDeleteThere's not much to say that's not already been said many, many times...I've read you forever, trying to comment at Disney is effing stupid impossible, and I will follow you wherever...
ReplyDeleteWill you tell us if you think you'll do a book or bring the recipes over? As other said, I will need to print every single one out because I haven't gotten to them all but want to someday. Write a book, teach a writing class, be a food network star, write for O magazine, be famous, whatever. Just keep being you.
ReplyDeletewell, apparently my comment didn't show up over there. so I'll leave one here. love the writing, recipes, stories. thanks. I just have to wonder if the people at disney read all those comments now and think, 'oops'. :)
ReplyDeleteCatherine, NO! This can't be! Please continue posting here. Daily. Hourly. Make us subscribe and pay by the word. Anything, just so long as we have access to your writing.
ReplyDeleteI have read you since you were Waiting for Birdy. I literally cried when the column ended, sulking around as though I had just been dumped by my best friend.
You write with a voice that is rare, talented, honest, and wry. We love you.
Hi, Catherine, I posted and I wrote them. It's just wrong. I'm so sorry, but I'm sure you know that there is no way it can be from anything you've done. Your writing is what we all need more of- honestly, humor, family and food- I mean, what else is there! I'm sure new opportunities will come your way, if they haven't already. Like maybe another book, b/c I've read the first one so much I think I could perform it.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Oh I have been a loyal follower too ever since before Birdy was born! I have been recommending your book to many friends and just recently ordered one for a friend who is expecting...
ReplyDeleteYou are an inspiration to me when I feel the most insecure as a mother- which happens more frequently than I care to admit!! I would absolutely love to own THE recipe book from Catherine Newman with all the pictures of food preparation and rosy cheeked children savoring the dishes!
Could you, Would you??!!
JR
Just in case you are wondering what recipe to delight us with first over here - my vote is homemade mozzarella :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry if this has been asked a bazillion times before, but when are you putting out your cookbook? I have a really grimy binder filled with black bean and tomato sauce stained print outs (quinoa sundaes and dad's spaghetti are big faves). I'd love to abuse an actual book.
ReplyDeleteI have never left a comment on any of your stuff, and now I am very sorry I haven't! You are my favorite writer/blogger ever!! Seriously, I talk about you to people like we are friends! I LOVE your writing style and read anything you write and have had so many moments of feeling like a better mother when I look at my life through your gentle style of parenting. I hope if the Disney site doesn't wise up, that you at least continue to write more here. The people who love you are always reading!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely keep the recipes coming, and don't leave out the life commentary along with it! I can't tell you how many times I've realized halfway through a difficult Monday that I had your blog to look forward to. I did comment over there and sent an email, but I wanted you to know even here that I (along with so many others, apparently), will read you wherever you are. And if you decide to monetize or whatever this blog, I'll still be a faithful reader, because you deserve to be paid for your time and talent.
ReplyDeleteHi Catherine. I think you need to write a beautiful, delicious cookbook. I commented over there for the first time ever - sorry. (jessikajava). I will follow you wherever you go. xxx
ReplyDeleteYou recipe column has been my favorite food/family/life blog for years. Please keep on writing!! I can't tell you how many times your words have made a difference in the middle of a crazy/chaotic/overwhelming day with the little ones. Laughter is such a gift. And understanding. And many of the recipes have become family favorites. (Dinner beans, anyone?)
ReplyDeleteOh Catherine- I'm so very sorry. You go where you go and we will foll-oh. It sort of rhymed. Talk about Ben & Birdy, talk about food, talk about parenting, just talk. And we will listen. Love you-
ReplyDeleteStupid disney. You are my best friend who doesn't know me. From recent past, your yeast waffles revolutionized our breakfasts (and dinners, yum). From further past, your advice to never let a "last" moment go uncherished made me a much better parent, as has all your other wise counsel. I, too, pledge to follow you wherever you go. You rock. Thank you, sincerely, for the amazing work you do. Stupid disney.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, stupiddisney, I have been reading Catherine for 8 years (my big girl is 8 now). And I have tried to post, and I am a moderately smart cookie, and it was RIDICULOUSLY difficult. This site makes posting easy-peasy. I am choosing to consider this, like other recent corporate let-downs, some sort of blessing in disguise.
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love your recipe columns. They are what brought me to your weblog. Thank you for writing!
ReplyDeleteSo do I need to go print out every single one of your recipes now? Or will they stay online and archived? Or will you publish a book? Or does Disney own the rights to what you published on their site? Eeekkk!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, could you maybe do something like Pioneer Woman does but in your own style? Your own sort of place with a recipe section, crafty section, guest bloggers, pictures of Michael section, etc. I bet it would go places for you. (jk about Michael pictures, lol!)
ReplyDeleteNew reader. I was looking for something somewhere else and I was linked to your baked pancake recipe. I loved the idea.... can't wait to try it... but I really liked your writing style and thus clicked around to find this blog. Glad to find it (you)!
ReplyDeleteI am a long time fan (since baby center) who seldom posts, but I felt compelled to comment on the end of the Dalai Mama. I hope you will continue to post recipes here on this blog with your glorious photos and funny comments. Also, Please, please do a cookbook with said photos and funniness! I will buy it for myself and my friends and family (except my husband who doesn't understand why I am always laughing out loud when I read your stuff). It will become a beloved cookbook covered in food stains (enticing, no?). If you do a book tour that includes the San Jose, CA area I will totally go and stand in line for you to sign it! You are such a talented writer, cook and parent and I get so much enjoyment out of reading all of what you write. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteJust catching up on your blog here. Okay, the Disney food thing? I never for the life of me could figure out how to post over there. I went through all the hoopla of setting up a login, password, and then I could never figure out how to login to comment. I swear I'm pretty savvy around computers. Anyway. Just so they know.
ReplyDeleteWonderful post. I appreciate
