Menace to (Clothespin) Society

Dear ones!

Please do visit over at family.com, where there are a couple of useful recipes. One for my dad's spaghetti sauce, which is out of this world, and the other for granola bars, which solves the problem of making granola into a portable substance.

Also, and I know this is bribery of the most grotesque sort: both columns offer actual, clear photographs of the baby featured below.

And by below, I mean here, in these photographs of the clothespin dolls sent to Ben and Birdy by Erin K., a stranger! A stranger who is a reader and feels like a friends. Erin, thank you. A million times, thank you. They are even more lovely in person, but I present you with:


The Woodland Gnome, A Casual Person, The Mermaid Ballet Girl, and Rapunzel. As Birdy has named them. They are perfectly beautiful and cherished by our entire family. Even that whiskery shadow back there.

Or maybe *especially* that whiskery shadow. Look out, Rapunzel! This is not the rescue you've been dreaming of!

  2. those might be the cutest clothespin people ever, if there is such a category for those things. Our clothespin people look more like those ugly dolls, except with acorn hats and badly felted capes;). Readers that feel like friends-- or become friends-- are one of the best things about this crazy cyber-universe. I got to meet my now real-life friend Sus this summer, and not only was she not a creepy, plumber-butted middle age man (my mother's fears), she was even more lovely and real and amazing in person. How cool is that?? PS-- thought of you as Noah began his work on Max's fifth birthday present, a new board game entitled "gross-opoly" so that things like pee river and big doo mountain can be included on the game board. Sigh. Apparently, having a five year old brother allows you to stay in the bowels phase just a little bit longer;) Happy fall!

    The clothespin dolls are very similar to ones that Sarah at www.thesmallobject.com makes. She's insanely creative, the same way you are with both words and food. Looking forward to trying out the new recipe for spaghetti sauce. Yum!

    This is a total aside to your post- I read Waiting for Birdy last Spring as we were thinking about number 2 and now number 2 (a girl- we have a 3 year old boy) is 6 months away, and I needed a comfort, a friend that wasn't busy or too far away, so I'm rereading. Thanks, again!

    Erin K: Since you're here. How long did it take you to perfect your dollmaking technique? I try stuff like that and it would take me a million years to get it just right (or maybe just a million dolls). They're very sweet.

    We made granola and granola bars today, which made me happier than you can imagine. And I can't stop thinking about making crackers since your post a few weeks back. You need to move to Colorado. All my friends are finding me a bit crazed at the moment.

    Why isn't anyone really commenting about the kitten!?! I need more kitten stories!? I also wanted to let you know that I recently made your dinner bean recipe (I know, it took a while), and it was great!! Do you think that there is any point in making the tamale pie if I can't make it with the cheese (my son cannot have bovine protein or soy)? And will you come up with crafty things to do with cat fur? As you can tell, I'm a fan of cats so have a few of my own . . .

Anyway, I was reading a thing by Dr. Oz the other day and he talked about constipation, and I thought, hey, we haven't had any columns on constipation lately! I think we're due.

    Question: what is it about Hunt's tomato sauce? No Hunt's here in Italy. I know, we have great tomatoes here but I am just curious about Hunt's special properties.

  16. We adored and fussed over our cat before we had these little, semi-continent children types. But seeing you cooking up a storm, bringing in a new cat, makes me think...they grow up, learn to wipe their orifices and new spaces open up in the heart and mind of the Mama. Maybe there's hope for our kitty after all.

  17. LOVED the granola bars . . . they didn't last a week in our house. Also, I'm not sure how I missed the vanilla extract last year, but I did. So I'm planning to give it as teacher gifts (along with orange extract, mmmmmmm)but I have the same question other posters did - what to do with the seeds inside the bean?? Leave them or scrape them? Oh Vanilla Extract Guru, what say you?

  18. I just made your dad's spag sauce - hello heaven!! seriously. i don't even believe in heaven, but if it exists, i'll bet they serve that sauce at every meal. i too get a little skeeved out by dried herbs, so i added fresh oregano and a bit of thyme and rosemary. heaven. again.

    The spaghetti sauce! It's amazing. Didn't think it was going to work in the crockpot - I tried it - I don't think it would concentrate enough. I made the huge batch and divided it up for the freezer - we've had 4 meals out of it so far and 3 more to go. It's the greatest!

    Also - never left a comment before, but isn't that strange? Because I feel like we're old friends...we go way back to when your Ben and my Sam were babies! He's about to be 10 too and simply enormous. Yet he still wants to curl up in my lap and though the sheer size of him is daunting, I have to grab onto these times as I can see them coming to an end soon. Sigh.
