Wild Weather

Last night thunder ripped across the sky and the trees shook down to their roots and the rain pelted the greening world and I thought: Spring! Our first honest-to-goodness thunderstorm of the season. Thrilling. And the perfect whether for macaroni and cheese, the perfect recipe for which is up over here, at family.com. But before the last of the snow has melted in the mountains, I can't resist showing you Ben and Ava's consolation-prize-winning homemade sled entry in the Berkshire East's Cardboard Classic. Those kids. I'm telling you.

  1. I'm struck, seeing this picture, with how huge these kids have gotten. It's been forever since I've seen a picture of Ava, and the two of them are starting to look half-grown. Wow. Please tell them the sled is fabulous. :)

  2. The very fact that there *is* such a thing as a "Cardboard Classic" makes me very happy.

    And thunderstorms! I know!

  3. I miss thunderstorms. It rains plenty here in western Oregon, but there have been maybe two thunderstorms in the six years I've lived here. Garrison Keillor once described thunderstorms as "the only majesty we have in the Midwest." Wisconsin-raised as I am, I've savored that quote ever since.

  4. Noah happened to be walking by when I pulled this up, and went, "what the?" and IMMEDIATELY then recognized Ben and Ava's handywork as a "genius, in a funny kind of way" cardboard sled. We too have a cardboard classic 'round these parts, and I think Ben should hurry up and trademark the Dum Dum, because Noah was all "oh, I should totally call Bow and tell him we could do that for next year, because the flat sleds go fastest, and we couldn't figure out how to make an exploding toilet that wasn't, ya know mom, 3-d."

So there you have it. Noah turns 10 next friday, and we'll be celebrating in the fantastic good mecca that is Asheville, NC. And I'm hoping that all this potty talk that my house seems to circle back to time and time again will leave itself in northern Michigan. Doubt it, but maybe...in any case, my hubby's favorite dish EVER is mac and cheese:)

So, I don't know what you read online when you're avoiding cleaning (not that I'm saying your house is messy, you understand) but this is a pretty cool little article that was on Slate.com about what to do with your weird veggie share veggies http://www.slate.com/id/2214524/ - your mac n cheese made me think of it. But only in the best way possible. We suffered through a CSA season here in South Florida (nothing grows down here in the heat except the ingredients for ratatouille, and lettuce) and gave up and now do a regular organic produce share. They're from farther away, but we only have 1 or 2 eggplants a month to contend with instead of 15.

I really miss living up North where events such as the "cardboard classic" are possible.

In the past three years my boys have had snow they could play in one time -- for exactly 1 hour.

I rather fancy the idea of "perfect whether." Whether or not to go outside....whether or not to get out of bed at all.....

  9. I love the laid-back, happy look on Ben's face. Really, he's going to be that guy that everyone loves to have around!

And I agree totally with what Joy said...and felt extremely geriatric when I considered the kids' ages now and realized they *are* half-grown! Gulp!
