Time of Wonder

Happy New Year, dear friends! I wanted to post a quick link to this column at wondertime, and to draw your attention to a comment at the bottom of the page that posts a link to an ebay auction raising money for the Kim family. The art that people have donated is unbelievable: honestly, it's inspiring just to look at those beautiful things. Thank you for posting that.

In related news, things are smoothing out with the comments over there, and I'm still asking you to try it out, and thanking you for trying and/or persevering, and letting you know that the good people at wondertime are eager to hear about your problems! Please send a note describing your problem, along with the e-mail address you are using to sign on, to memberservices@Wondertime.com. I mean, when else do you ever get encouragement to kvetch about your problems? You could even write them about how you, say, finally took your crib apart to put way, only you forgot that every box of memoribilia in the house was stored beneath it. Every box of crap that is now piled up, dusty and exposed, in the middle of your bedroom. I don't know if they could help you with that. I'm just saying you could mention it.

  1. Okay, I've bitched to Wondertime about not being able to leave comments. I was tempted to also bitch to them about the problem I'm having with the stupid vacuum cleaner. Then I realized that I prefer things the way they are, with me being unable to vacuum. I'd like to be able to leave comments, though.

  2. Happy New Year!
I will go back over to Wondertime and send an email as I still cannot comment.

We have the "barfing flu" to quote you at our house so things are not exactly peachy. My older girl recovered in 24 hours but the little one is still going strong after 48 hours. Keeping me busy (and the washer/dryer).

The Kim story as stayed with me as well. It is so hard to shake. I will check out the ebay site later.

Best wishes to you, Michael, Ben, and Birdy for a wonderful 2007.

  3. Oh! I have an off-topic comment to add! And here it is!

A long, long time ago, you mentioned the scent of Mrs. Meyer's geranium-scented cleaning products. I don't remember exactly what you said, just that your feelings about them were strong enough to lodge the product in my mind as Highly Desirable.

The Mrs. Meyer's stuff isn't sold in any of the stores where I shop, so I put it on my Christmas hint list, and my brother ordered me the countertop spray and the scrubbing powder. It smells SO SO SO good. Thanks for mentioning it! Now that I know I like it, I can order it in multi-packs from Amazon.com.

  4. Can I complain to Wondertime about the weather? I wouldn't put it past Disney to be able to control even that.

In a follow up to your question about vacationing in Ottawa this winter, I give you this link:

Happy New Year Catherine - or "Bonne Annee" as they say here in France where I am living for a year and still enjoying your articles tremendously. (My youngest is the same age as Birdy - I am a great fan).
    wishing you the best!

I can't post or read the comments at wondertime. Is that where the ebay link is for the Kim family auction? If so, can someone repost it here? Thanks!

We also stored things under the crib - mainly husband's saxaphone and one of his many guitars. It used to hide his tool box but that finally made it to the basement. Who knew so much of our lives were hiding under the cribs?

Now we just shove everything under the girls' twin beds, including the guitars and the failed remains of a craft project.

    Happy New Year.

Oh dear! I can't post a comment over there either and am too tired to try tonight...but feel free to transfer this over.
Your words struck a cord with me. The anticipation of grief...especially during such norman rockwell-ish moments...i just never knew or believed that anyone would relate to that sort of feeling. Hearing you say that you are seeing everything through the cold glass of the Kim tragedy and that your husband is able to keep it in perspective....my goodness...that's us. We can hear of the same tragic story and he is able to pray about it and feel it and move on...me? i feel the need to punish myself or make myself suffer for them for a certain amount of time. after that phase...it's the feeling of "oh no...will this happen to us?"
now i am rambling...i'll stop...but thank you. thank you so much for your gift of writing. reading your post was like coming home.
ps...i'm obviously too tired to use capital letters too!

Oh good, I am glad that it wasn't just me who couldn't figure out how to leave or read comments!
I hadn't heard about the Kim family, so after reading about it there, I looked it up online. What a sad, tragic story. I find my thoughts and prayers going out to them at diferent moments through the day. I can't imagine going through that...

  14. Gasp! You took your crib apart over the holidays too? Quinn and Birdy are only weeks apart in age, but every time a milestone like this converges, I'm always surprised. You'd think I'd learn.

I confess I haven't tried to leave a comment at Wondertime yet, but I will. Thanks for your column, by the way. I know a lot of people say this to you but I imagine you don't mind hearing it again and again: your words and experiences have meant so much through the years, as I've been reading along while in front of my computer at work, and then slapped my forehead in amazement at the similarity of our experiences, or cried/laughed about a revelation that you / Ben / Birdy had. Thanks for that.

  15. Here is the auction link for bensmom04 who cannot find it: kimfamilyauction.typepad.com/. take care.
There is so much talent and generosity there: great and inspiring artists.
About the "gag" column:I wonder if the standing on one foot trick would work for gagging and barfing pregnant women. I wish I could have tried four years ago. I am sure the trick will be useful at somepoint though. Does it work, for example, for stomach flu?... I guess not. That was wishful thinking here. I am waiting for the virus to enter our house any time now even if I am happy it did not on Christmas Eve like last year.
Happy New Year to Catherine, to her family and to all her readers !
    Francine

  16. Hey there. I just wanted to let you know that I have been reading your blogs/articles now for about 3 years, and I finally became inspired to start my own. Thanks for the virtual kick in the pants!

  17. Ditto for me re Wondertime - no luck. I will email them.

I thought about you during the Kim's tragedy - I wondered if you were following the story. While my husband certainly empathized w/ the Kim Family he couldn't understand why I became somewhat obsessed with it. While it wasn't my own family it was happening to the fact that it COULD happen - and why couldn't it? If something so simple as a wrong turn could happen to them, it could happen to any of us. At night I sit on the couch and tend to worry needlessly about my little boy and what will happen to our family in the future. My current paranoia is global warming - okay just realizing my post is
totally depressing - let me switch gears...

Catherine you rock! I love that you are just you and think about the same things that the rest of us do. Reading your column never fails to either make me well up and cry or burst out with a belly-laugh...usually both if I am lucky! I wonder if Kati Kim is already a fan of yours. I'd be willing to bet yes.

Catherine, I want to tell you that what you write really hits with me. I tried to write this twice and Wondertime, but it won't go throught. Basically, I feel like when good things are happening, I feel like they are going to end too soon. I remember a couple years ago, when you wrote about how you were decorating your tree and Ben said, "oh man. I've been looking forward to this for so long and now it's already half over!" Something like that. I think that about so many things. One example is your blog! I can't wait for it to come and when it does I read really fast, but after I hit that second paragraph or so, I start to feel like "it's already half over!" So, I slow down and try to read slowly. Lame, but true. You rock!
Anyway, don't worry about the comment page. They'll fix it. We'll keep trying. I already e-mailed them and I know they're working on it. Hope all is well with you and the fam!!

  20. re: kiera's comment on her "chair clothes" - funny, in my bedroom we have what my 5 year old calls the "clothes chair". I'm guessing that they're pretty much the same thing...
We also followed the Kim's story on the news as well as the coverage of the three hikers lost on Mt. Hood (also in Oregon.) So sad.

Wishing you & your family much health and happiness in the new year.

  22. Oh, I do hate putting myself out here as an idiot in case this should be completely obvious to me, but what's the deal in the wondertime comments where the word "breast-feeding" is replaced with ####? Please don't tell me this is a weird Disney censoring thing. Is it actually a legitimate blogging expression, like LOL? Sorry to be dense, but I just have to ask. It's yet another opportunity for me to get fired up about our culture's ridiculously puritanical ways.

    Love,

    Hadley

  23. I tried tried tried to comment at Wondertime, and now need to go complain...
But I was apologizing for being insensitive to your sick kids because I was laughing at Birdy Who Cried Wolf - she is just like my 4 yr old, who is a super bedtime staller, dramatically throwing himself down on the bed because he is "much too exhausted" to brush his teeth, etc. I often say, "What's that I hear, is it the phone? It's BROADWAY calling!" I should have given him Kvetch for a middle name...

  24. You once said that you'd be oh-so-flattered if someone tagged you for a meme, so from cinnamon gurl, to notsosage, to me to you, you are tagged for the following meme:
Go to your music player of choice and put it on shuffle. Say the following questions aloud, and press play. Use the song title as the answer to the question. NO CHEATING.
PS - c4cara also participated in this meme. I will now be googling all the songs & artists these folks are listening to that I have never heard of...

  30. I just read a post and saw a mention of Ottawa. Are you coming to Ottawa this winter? The hilarious part is we have no snow for the first time in 35 years it feels like spring here!! It is normally -30 here right now!!

I will send you tons of links on things to do if you come!! This is hilarious - it feels like an old friend is coming to a sleepover.

  33. I DID IT!!! My Wondertime post worked! I clicked the "Add Comment" link first, before I clicked in the actual comment text box, then it asked me to log in, and then I typed in the comment box and poof - there it was!!

It's the little things that make me happy...

I just read your October Oprah mag article "Bosom" and laughed so hard - what a creative way to chronicle your life! I was laughing and thinking of all the funny stories of my own..
There's a woman in Seattle (story on her in Seattle Times http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/lifestyle/294062_booblady30.html)
who's writing a book about boobs (her website is www.booksonboobs.com) and gathering stories from women - she calls them "mammoirs"...

And I just have to say it - what's up with those weird spammers? That stuff should be so illegal...

This is off topic, but I just read Berkley Dad, a column by Michael Lewis on Slate.com. It is one man's view of the delivery of his third child, and it's a pretty funny take on things. Catherine, I just thought you would get a good chuckle and appreciate the California vibes.

I don't even have a blog and as I've said before, yours is the ONLY one I read.. unless you count Wondertime!! I will post over there though. I just had to comment on "teaching" Michael w/ patience. It is so funny how things that are so darn simple are the hardest to figure out sometimes! I can say this because I have only just begun to treat my husband with the same courtesy and respect I would treat a guest as the beautiful quote says on my fridge... you know what? It really works. (oh, I have my moments of course). It has taken us 10 years of marriage to figure out that treating each other as well as we treat our children, was the best thing we could do...
